We don’t hear music with our ears alone: we can also experience it intensely with our whole body and with all our senses. In the workshop »Kosmos Klang« many special instruments are available for the purpose, such as sound chairs and vibrating water bowls. Participants experience the relaxing effect of the vibrations produced, and even make the sounds visible.

The Hamburg State Orchestra's Philharmonic Concerts become time-plays, transcending the boundaries of the ordinary: This concert showcases Detlev Glanert's play with Haydn's way of thinking – his new composition, inspired by the Farewell Symphony, is juxtaposed with the original. Haydn thus encounters us today as a mirror of the past and, through Glanert, as a part of the here and now. This unabashed musical play opens up new perspectives on our musical culture, our thinking and being, and our way of receiving music.

Since 2017, a lovingly compiled and top-class programme has been delighting young and old alike every year on the Elbphilharmonie’s festively decorated stage. Seasoned artists as well as great up-and-coming talents do the honours here, where you can hear cheerful and festive, enchanting and contemplative music. And right in the middle of it all: the wonderful Katharina Thalbach, who brings the »festival of love« to life in all its facets with her unmistakable voice and superb acting – cheerful and touching, profound and profound.

Sukyeon Kim is one of the most promising pianists of the younger generation: her playing is characterised by stupendous technique and great expressiveness. She won numerous competitions at a young age. Her broad repertoire includes works from the baroque to the modern era. For her piano recital at the Elbphilharmonie, she will present a varied programme of well-known composers – an unforgettable evening full of musical masterpieces and impressive sounds.

Joja Wendt’s New Year concert in the Elbphilharmonie kicks off the New Year in exuberant, genre-transcending style. Traditionally, it’s an evening full of musical surprises with a reasonable chance that Hamburg’s incumbent mayor, Till Brönner, Tom Gaebel, Götz Alsmann or musical companions such as Inga Rumpf and Abi Wallenstein will drop by as surprise guests.

"After the second encore, the hall is in a frenzy," the Abendblatt newspaper observed after Hayato Sumino's brilliant debut in the Recital Hall of the Elbphilharmonie. It was only natural that he would be invited back immediately afterward! And this time, the audience will be treated to a welcome in the Grand Hall of the Japanese YouTube star, who is causing a sensation there under the pseudonym "Cateen." On screen, he delights millions of viewers with his sensitive original compositions and spectacular arrangements of classics like Ravel's "Boléro." He only recently ventured into the "real world," onto international stages—with tremendous success. His first album for the Sony Classical label was also released shortly afterward.

»Young, cool and brilliant: This is the string quartet of the future« (Sydney Morning Herald): the Vision String Quartet has generated enthusiasm worldwide for years – also because it is so unlike other string quartets. The four young musicians from Berlin, who also see themselves as a band, enjoy experimenting with concert formats and not only play classical works, but also their own pieces in which they dive into many musical worlds, from folk, pop and rock to minimal music. With exactly the same, varied programme of classical quartet works, poppy pieces (and perhaps one or two surprises), they now make a guest appearance at the Elbphilharmonie.

Vision String Quartet

Now that's what you call a well-rehearsed team! Joshua Bell has been Music Director of the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields since 2011 and sees himself as primus inter pares. When necessary, the star violinist also leads the traditional orchestra as soloist in the violin concerto. This is not a given when Johannes Brahms's Violin Concerto is on the podium. The demanding work usually requires a conductor alongside the soloist – just like Robert Schumann's romantic First Symphony. But Joshua Bell and his Academy love the direct contact: "This orchestra knows me so well that they can interpret all my gestures. They know what I mean when I raise my eyebrows or bend my knees." Moreover, the highly virtuosic Brahms Concerto is considered a sonic symbol of the indissoluble bond between soloist and orchestra: it is the first violin concerto in music history of a symphonic nature.

School Concert »Vision String Quartet«

Parents with babies up to one year old and expectant mothers can make themselves comfortable on round baby blankets, and listen to the string sounds of Ensemble Resonanz. Familiar melodies invite the audience to sing along. Pram parking spaces and baby changing units are available both in the city districts and in the Elbphilharmonie.
