From the lively trumpet to the bulky tuba: in this one-day workshop, participants get to know various wind instruments – and even play themselves! The brass players of Symphoniker Hamburg reveal their tips and tricks here. Finally, using tubes and funnels, everyone makes their own instrument, which you may take home of course.

When his first solo album was released, Chris Thile was just 13 years old. Since then, he has effortlessly maintained his reputation as the coolest mandolin player under the sun. Whether bluegrass, jazz, or classical: Thile can do it all, and he plays with such disarming ease and virtuosity that even music lovers who have already experienced some excellence are regularly left speechless. He has already performed at the Elbphilharmonie three times – solo in 2017 and 2022, and with the Punch Brothers in 2018 – and each time he was enthusiastically applauded by the audience.

He is one of the grand seigneurs of the organ world: Bernard Foccroulle. As the long-time artistic director of Brussels' La Monnaie Opera House until 2007, he also worked in the opera world, but his original profession was and remains that of an organist. As such, he has earned an outstanding reputation as an expert in both early and contemporary music.

When the five Amadeus Award-winning musician Julian le Play broke new musical ground in spring 2025 and set off on his big Unplugged Tour, nobody could have predicted the huge popularity that these concerts would receive. Le Play’s best songs from the last five albums in new, pared-down arrangements, embedded in his unique stories and anecdotes, moved and enthralled his audience – so much so that there will now be a sequel in March 2026.

On her latest album, bassist and singer Meshell Ndegeocello enters an ever-changing dialogue with the life and work of African-American writer and queer civil rights activist James Baldwin. His fight for freedom is also her fight.

On his latest album, he explores the connection between Johann Sebastian Bach and Italian music.

Tarmo Peltokoski, the Finnish "talent of the century" (Tagesspiegel) on the baton, has been a close collaborator with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen since his phenomenally successful debut in June 2021. This season, Hamburg audiences will once again experience how Peltokoski's energetic presence spurs the Kammerphilharmonie's musicians to crackling peak performances. The evening's soloist is another exceptional young talent, Swedish violinist Daniel Lozakovich.

His stage name is based on a martial arts icon and he enjoys karting as a hobby: Bruce Liu is full of surprises. Just like his incredibly colorful piano playing, which has catapulted him into the top league of the classical music world. Bruce Liu was born in Paris and grew up in Canada, but his Asian roots have shaped him not least of all. "I notice that Chinese history – Confucianism, Taoism – is in my blood. But through my profession, I am also closely connected to European culture." His touch definitely has a French vein, elegant and incredibly light, while a haunting tension simmers beneath the surface. Excellent prerequisites for Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto, which covers all emotional ranges, from sensitive tenderness to barely controllable outbursts of energy.

Edwar Elgar sat down at the piano after a tiring day of lessons and played a random melody that caught his wife’s attention. Without further ado, he began to improvise variations on this enchanting melody, inspired by the different characters of his friends and activities around him: a »gruff disposition«, a »stuttering girlfriend«, his first attempts at playing the piano, a dog tumbling down an embankment, or – not to be forgotten – the world-famous »Nimrod« variation, with which Elgar honours his best friend. The solution to the riddle, the enigma of the variations, which according to Elgar is hidden within the composition, remains unsolved to this day.

"I imagined it like this: Brahms woke up one morning and had the blues." It's hard to put it more succinctly and humorously than Brad Mehldau himself: In 2013, the pianist recorded the symphonic jazz album "Variations on a Melancholy Theme." Now, the work finds its way to the Elbphilharmonie with the Hamburg Camerata.

Brad Mehldau is one of the most exciting voices in contemporary jazz piano. In his performance, improvisation meets structure, freedom meets rigor, jazz meets classical and pop, his own songs meet new, often daring interpretations of others' music. Brad Mehldau's solo concert at the Elbphilharmonie will be a source of excitement to see where his musical journey takes him. Destination unknown for now.

Described as "one of the most influential pianists of the past decades" (ARTE), American Brad Mehldau delights fans far beyond the jazz world. This is due not only to Mehldau's extraordinary improvisational skills, but also to his compositions, which reflect his deep love of the architecture of music as well as his enthusiasm for good pop music. As part of Mehldau's "Reflektor" festival, some of his compositions can now be heard in new big band arrangements. Mehldau performs them with the hr-Bigband under Darcy James Argue.

The soundscapes of the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra's chamber concerts are as diverse as the personalities of the musicians who perform in them. The demands of the orchestra pit are often determined by the scale and diversity of voices. Chamber music, on the other hand, reduces this dimension to smaller ensembles and allows for intimate musical interaction. As in a dialogue, diverse opinions collide, new ideas emerge and develop during performance, thus opening up a creative space for spontaneous development.
