Amaro Freitas describes himself in an interview as a "percussion pianist," and indeed, he infuses the piano with drumming qualities in his shimmering Brazilian jazz compositions. And so much more! Two topics are particularly dear to Freitas's heart: preserving the unique natural environment of his native Brazil and the "decolonization of jazz," as he calls his musical journeys into the indigenous musical cultures of Brazil and Africa.
