Although Rachmaninoff’s First Symphony was something of a flop at its premiere in 1897 (the conductor, Glazunov, was a little worse for drink), it’s a work that signalled the arrival of a great Russian composer. Revel in the ominous drama of the opening movement, the skittishness of the second and the thrill of the final Allegro that finishes in a blaze of brass-gilded glory.
