No other work occupied Igor Stravinsky for as long a period as his "choreographic scenes from Russia," which premiered in Paris in 1923 under the title "Les Noces" (The Weddings). Initial ideas for a choral work depicting a peasant wedding date back to 1913. The composer initially searched through old folk song collections for original texts for his libretto. In a convoluted creative process, he ultimately created their musical setting with an exceptional ensemble of choir, soloists, four pianos, and percussion. "My aim was not to recreate the customs of a rural wedding," Stravinsky later explained. "Rather, I wanted to invent a kind of scenic ceremony myself..."
