Based on the ancient tragedy Oedipus Tyrannus by Sophocles, Igor Stravinsky created an impressive opera-oratorio in the 1920s. It was Stravinsky's idea to set the Oedipus story to music as a Latin text with a ritualistic feel. His librettist, the famous French playwright Jean Cocteau, accepted his friend's experiment and, together with the composer, wrote the translation for the vocal text as well as the narrator's French text.
