In 1991, the Soviet Union collapsed. In 1990, pogroms took place in Baku, now the capital of Azerbaijan, on the edge of the Soviet empire, leading to the exodus and diaspora of large numbers of Armenians. In a sense, this marked the beginning of the collapse of the vast Soviet empire.
