The last but one concert of the Chamber Music Series focuses on the folklore inspired works by the Slovak composer Ilya Zeljenka; as well as Antonín Dvořák, who used the subtitle “Slavonic” in his String Quartet No. 10 in E flat major, Op. 51. The ninth concert, featuring the Kaprálová Quartet, will also offer Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E flat major, Op. 44, with Petr Jiříkovský at the piano.

The last chamber music concert opens with a unique work by a Latvian composer who is one of the best-known musicians in the Baltic States. Peteris Vasks’s Quartet for Violin, Viola, Cello and Piano is an original composition that requires precision and proper interaction between the individual performers. The second part of the concert will bring Ludwig van Beethoven’s Septet in E flat major, Op. 20, performed by soloists from the Prague Philharmonia, including its former member, the double bassist Adam Honzírek.

We will present two of the most prominent composers of the 20th-century in New York, two friends – John Cage (1912–1992) and Morton Feldman (1926–1987). Their music will be discussed by their friend Petr Kotík at an extra special concert. Kotík will lead an expert discussion about their works as a long-time collaborator of both composers, in particular of John Cage (continuous collaboration in the years 1964–1992).

On 18 December 1950, John Cage wrote in a letter to Pierre Boulez: “Feldman’s music is extremely beautiful now. It changes with each piece, I find him my closest friend now among the composers here.”
