This is the story of Anne Shirley, an honest and unapologetic eleven-year-old orphan, and her first year in Green Gables, a farm outside the town of Avonlea. When Anne arrives, she discovers the Cuthberts (elderly Matthew and his stern sister, Marilla) wanted a boy, not a fiery redheaded girl with a soaring imagination.
