Lotte lies sleepless in her apartment. She has been abandoned by the love of her life, Michael. She has also just been fired from her job as a social worker. Throughout her adult years, Lotte has been committed to the community and her fellow human beings. She has taken care of the weakest, but now no one takes care of her.
