Marsault is a nihilistic young man living in 1940s Algiers. After attending his mother's funeral, Marsault becomes involved in a series of events that ultimately lead to his arrest and trial for murder. During the trial, Mersault's personality is questioned, with fateful consequences for the French clerk.
