The centerpiece of the Symphonic Band’s first spring concert is Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition (orchestrated by Maurice Ravel and transcribed for band by Paul Lavender). The pictures the work depicts were created by Mussorgsky’s friend, artist Viktor Hartmann. Following Hartmann’s untimely death, the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg exhibited his work, and after touring the exhibition, Mussorgsky was inspired to compose...
