For Barbara Hannigan, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 is above all about love – four movements bound together by the composer’s heartbreak in love and his feelings for his student, Baroness Therese Malfatti. After several successful performances of the work, Hannigan returns to Copenhagen with the symphony, which she calls “an absolute heartbreaker”.
