Few among today’s pianists, and from the past, could surpass Nikolai Lugansky’s searching artistry, deep musical intelligence and gilt-edged technical authority. His recital couples Robert Schumann’s brooding Fantasiestücke Op. 111, ardent late works, with his youthful cycle of piano pieces, Faschingsschwank aus Wien. Chopin’s Impromptus, spontaneous and mostly playful, are framed by his wistful Barcarolle and the mercurial Scherzo No. 4.
