Long a staple of the symphonic canon, Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 (“The Great”) remains a touchstone for every orchestra and conductor. Classic in its structure but Romantic in its grandeur, it has been described by some as being of “heavenly length.” Or, as Robert Schumann said, "the riches that lay here made me tremble with excitement."
