The heir of a fictional kingdom suffers from overwhelming sadness; but when Fata Morgana, a witch, inadvertently trips and falls, he suddenly doubles up with laughter. The offended witch curses the prince, forcing him to embark on a quest for happiness in the form of three oranges. His epic journey is replete with transformed princesses and wild card games, with an angry cook and monstrous rat for good measure. Drawing inspiration from a whimsical commedia dell’arte piece by Carlo Gozzi, the composer wrote a sarcastic and poetic libretto. Prokofiev’s lively style is undeniably catchy, placing the orchestra at the centre as a legitimate character. His musical landscape is eclectic, unpredictable, sweeping everything up in frenzy. This lively burlesque, satirical, and fantasy piece is directed by Laurent Pelly, and led by the sharp hand of internationally renowned conductor Dmitry Matvienko.

A revelation in instrumental solo performance at the 24th Victoires de la Musique Classique awards, Adélaïde Ferrière was the first percussionist and marimba player nominated at this ceremony. For this concert, she reveals the diverse sonic identities of keyboard percussion, blending transcriptions for marimba, maracas, and multi-percussion instruments, and presents a condensed version of her work on the contemporary repertoire with a program featuring Philip Glass, Meredith Monk, Keike Abe, Heng Liu, John Psathas, Emmanuel Séjourné, Javier Alvarez, and Iannis Xenakis.

Arielle Beck was named Revelation Instrumental Soloist of the Year at the Victoires de la Musique Classique 2026. She embodies a new generation of prodigies; after winning First Prize at the International Jeune Chopin Competition (with Martha Argerich as president) at the age of 9, she got into the Paris Conservatoire when she was 14, making her one of the most promising young pianists of her generation. Her virtuosic recital, mixing German and French Romanticism with Russian music, is perfectly fit to her talent and maturity.

Well-known to audiences at the Opéra Underground, singer and percussionist Rebecca Roger Cruz unfolds a unique soundscape at the confluence of ancient, traditional, and improvised music. (Afro)Venezuelan percussion, Latin American popular song, Baroque, operatic, jazz, rock, and flamenco repertoire—all these influences contribute to her singular style. With her metamorphic voice and accompanied by four musicians, Rebecca Roger Cruz experiments with the sources and textures of sound, delicately orchestrating a percussive ceremony from which the forces of nature emerge.

To open the highlight "In Praise of the Learned People", what better way than a documentary, followed by a discussion, on Giovanna Marini (1937-2024) who, from Italy, devoted her entire life to the defense, safeguarding, transmission and reinvention of popular cultures and knowledge?

Giovanna Marini, the voice of the invisible

For two weeks, the Underground Opera challenges the absurd opposition between “popular” and “learned”: here are nine events to celebrate the sophisticated and vibrant musical inventions brought by the peoples of the world, from Italy to Indonesia via the Balkans, Turkey or Iraq.

In Praise of the Learned People

In their new creation, Julien Lesuisse and his group Crimi assert in songs, poems and dances the idea of a “South European Maghreb”, with a bubbling blend of original songs and Sicilian work songs.

"Honey" Crimes Groove from Italy and the Maghreb

“ A free and fluid collective ,” Crimi has been exploring a musical, linguistic, and emotional space for seven years, where the searing imprints of exile and memory, the urgency to create, the intensity of living, and the profound nakedness of love constantly recombine. It is driven by the taut writing of Julien Lesuisse (formerly of Mazalda), who has opened up a new expressive field by embracing the Sicilian language inherited from his grandmother and by weaving a close link between the songs and rhythms of Southern Italy and those of Oran raï, the cheikhate , and their ancestors. Sharing and transcending with his partners a rich tapestry of experiences in experimental, improvised, and/or unconventional music, Lesuisse creates a world of confluences and clashes in the heart of the Mediterranean basin, where modality and harmony rub against and sting each other, where the pulses of the Sicilian tambourine and the West Algerian gallal mingle with contemporary groove, where improvisation distorts the framework of songs.

“Djoussour,” in Arabic, means “the bridges.” This second evening of the “In Praise of Learned People” festival serves precisely as a bridge, erected between artists, cultures, and musical languages that are constantly evolving. From Baghdad to Paris, exile has always been a source of inspiration for composer, oud player, and singer Fawzy Al-Aiedy. This dual rootedness, both painful and transcendent, has been reflected in his creations for over 40 years. Today, he shares this story with his son Amin, creating a new alchemy and intimacy. The duo reveals Iraqi folk music in all its facets, whether drawn from popular tradition or from Fawzy's original repertoire, inspired by maqams (musical modes) and nourished by Arabic rhythms. Amin's arrangements on double bass and oud contribute to giving a new luster to these reinterpretations.

Eighteen musicians from the AURA region and three Indonesian dancers come together around a creation for gamelan, the imposing percussive and resonant instrument originating from Bali, and Western sounds, under the guidance of composer Jean-Pierre Goudard.
