For this concert, Russian pianist Maria Esphai is Marius' partner on stage. The program includes works by Pärt, Shostakovich and Andrei Esphai, who is Maria's father. The Shostakovich sonata dates from 1975 and became the composer's very last composition. The slow third movement, which can be heard as the composer's farewell to life, is inspired by the mood and theme of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata."
