After a stellar performance of Mahler’s Ninth Symphony in November 2021, Simon Rattle will be conducting the traditional SZ Charity Concert for the first time. Popular repertoire classics and – in most cases – internationally renowned soloists are among the cornerstones of the charity concerts, and this year there are two special highlights: violinist Veronika Eberle will perform Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with newly composed cadenzas by Jörg Widmann, while Simon Rattle is offering a young Bavarian composer a great opportunity. Johannes Wiedenhofer, born in 2005, won a special prize at “Jugend komponiert Bayern” in 2020 with his orchestral work Beyond Darkness. BRSO concertmaster Radoslaw Szulc, who conducted the world premiere with the Bayerisches Landesjugendorchester, immediately expressed his enthusiasm for the work to Simon Rattle, and therefore Wiedenhofer received a commission: an auspicious beginning for what we hope will be a great career.
