Piano faculty member Hugh Hinton builds a program around pieces of the 20th and 21st centuries that feature personal connections or dedications to friends, colleagues, and partners. This circle of contemporary piano works, for my dear friend, Who, explores the personal connections and friendships embedded in their creation. Most pieces of music have a dedication, yet we often overlook the stories behind a dedication written in a score. John Cage and Morton Feldman were close friends and inspired each other’s musical explorations. Their pieces also reflect the wider circle of dancers and artists they were intimately involved with. Gyorgy Kurtag’s Jatekok series become a personal musical diary, with many serving as memorials to departed friends. Tobias Picker has been a pioneering composer, while African American composer George Walker developed his own highly personal and highly expressive chromatic musical style.
