To save himself from a fatal storm, King Idomeneo promises the god Neptune that he will kill the first human he encounters. Unfortunately, that turns out to be his son Idamante. The king becomes torn between fatherly love and his promise to the gods. This fateful dilemma is central to Mozart's masterpiece.
