This event, titled "HYS x HSO Side-by-Side," marks a special collaboration between the Hawaii Youth Symphony (HYS) and the Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra (HSO), showcasing a unique side-by-side program. This initiative brings together professional musicians and aspiring young talents, allowing them to share the stage in what promises to be an unforgettable performance.

For this fall 2023 concert, an impressive ensemble of 150 musicians will grace the stage, making it possibly the largest orchestra ever to perform at the Waikiki Shell. The orchestra will feature 86 musicians from Youth Symphony I and 64 musicians from the Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra, creating a multi-generational musical experience that celebrates both the future and the heritage of orchestral music.

Under the baton of conductor Joseph Stepec, the evening's program will include vibrant and dynamic works such as Arturo Márquez's "Conga del Fuego Nuevo," Hector Berlioz's "Hungarian March," and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Capriccio Italien." These pieces promise to captivate the audience with their energy, beauty, and complexity.

In keeping with the spirit of community and accessibility, the Hawaii Youth Symphony and the Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra are thrilled to offer this concert free to the public, thanks to the generous support of our sponsors and supporters.
