Her passion for storytelling through music, exploring connections between vaudeville, blues, and folk traditions, makes her performances deeply engaging and profoundly moving. Salvant's ability to unearth rarely recorded, forgotten songs with compelling narratives, humor, and unexpected twists has established her as an eclectic curator of musical experiences.

Since winning the Thelonious Monk competition in 2010, Salvant has received critical acclaim, including Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album for three consecutive albums and nominations for her album WomanChild in 2014. Her recent achievements include the prestigious MacArthur fellowship and the Doris Duke Artist Award in 2020. Her debut for Nonesuch Records, "Ghost Song," released in March 2022, has received two Grammy Nominations and widespread acclaim.
