Manchester is set to host a series of spectacular concerts celebrating the timeless works of Ludwig van Beethoven. Kicking off the festivities is 'The Planets' on September 21, 2024, with the BBC Philharmonic. The Hallé follows up with 'Top of the Classics' on September 28, and Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony on November 28 and December 1. The celebration continues into 2025 with 'Rush Hour: Beethoven’s Fifth' and 'Hallé Rush Hour - Beethoven's Fifth' on April 17, 'Summer Classics' on May 24, and culminating in 'Ode to Joy' on May 29. Rapturously received by the audience at its 1824 premiere, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony remains a firm favourite today. By this time, Beethoven was profoundly deaf and had to be gently turned to face the audience to accept their adulation, which was shown by the waving of hands, hats and handkerchiefs as well as multiple standing ovations.
