In 1891, Richard Strauss read Don Quixote, a novel of adventurous knightly tales by Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes, which had been suggested to him by Cosima Wagner. The book must have made a lasting impression on the composer. He worked on the symphonic poem for six years before it premiered in Cologne in 1898. British cellist Steven Isserlis will lend his instrument’s voice to the title character. Always by his side: Sancho Panza, brought to life by the violist Emiko Yuasa – who has been the First Principal Viola of the BRSO since last March. We are delighted to welcome back Daniel Harding, who will transport us into mythical worlds in this concert – which also include Hans Werner Henze’s Erlkönig. Between the two works, Haydn’s “La passione” in F minor will provide an intense, even existential experience.

This chamber music concert is a celebration of musical textures featuring the number three. It was inspired by Thomas Adès’ Sonata with its unusual instrumentation of oboe, horn, and harpsichord that combines a contemporary style with French Baroque flair. Adès wrote this work as an homage to Claude Debussy, thus providing the perfect link to Debussy’s exuberant and extremely popular Sonata. In between the two works, Franco Donatoni’s Small II lends a striking contrast. After an intense first half, the second half of the concert features more “classical” trios, so to speak, that are connected through the use of the piano. Unusually, however, these were written by the rarely performed composers Charles Koechlin, August Klughardt, and Eugène Goossens. These works are distinguished by profound, lavish, and distinct melodies that allow each instrument to showcase its vocal qualities.

Hans Werner Henze was not an ivory tower composer: uncompromising as well as politically committed, he viewed composing not in terms of style but rather as a means of exploring consciousness. Das Floß der Medusa (The Raft of the Medusa), dedicated to revolutionary leader Che Guevara, caused a scandal in the heated atmosphere of the 1960s. It tells the story of the frigate Méduse, which sank in 1816, and whose passengers, abandoned by its officers, drifted on a raft in the Atlantic Ocean for four weeks – an allegory of the abuse of power by those in authority. Sir Simon Rattle has immersed himself in this music, whose dark power and impulsive despair are impossible to ignore. Jörg Widmann will also be the featured soloist in the world premiere of Zones of Blue by Siemens Prize winner Olga Neuwirth.

British countertenor Tim Mead is highly acclaimed not only for his elegant, warm tone and rich, mellifluous sound but also for his exceptionally alluring and stylish interpretations of a wide range of repertoire. He specialises in Baroque music – which is why Sir Simon Rattle has built the program for the next BRSO Baroque Matinee around Tim Mead, featuring wonderful cantatas and arias by Bach and Handel. The baroque ensemble consisting of BRSO musicians will also be in the spotlight performing two of Handel’s Concerti grossi, originally written as accompaniments and interludes for operas and oratorios. Their magnificent and festive character makes them instantly enchanting.

Otherworldly and infinitely fragile: this is how one might describe the atmosphere of Gabriel Fauré’s Prélude from his symbolist suite Pelléas et Mélisande that sets the tone at the beginning of this concert. It tells the tragic story of two lovers, which, similarly to Sergei Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, does not end happily – but contains breathtaking emotion. It is a work for which conductor Tugan Sokhiev has a particular fondness. Camille Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto offers a double premiere since, oddly enough, it has never been performed before on the BRSO stage. French pianist Alexandre Kantorow, who in just a few years has managed to play his way around the world on 88 keys and achieve international fame, will also be making his BRSO debut.

What happens when the three composers York Bowen, Benjamin Britten, and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor are all featured in one concert? That’s right: a distinctly British program extending from late Romanticism to Modernism. Bowen, who often composed for the horn, creates a rather unusual combination in his Quintet, in which the horn, with its elegiac tone, is supported by four string instruments. In Coleridge-Taylor’s work, the clarinet engages in a subtle, witty dialogue with the string instruments. And Britten made arguably the most significant British contributions to the string quartet genre; nevertheless, his First String Quartet is rarely heard nowadays – making it a notable work on this evening’s programme.

The BRSO has sponsored the Bavarian State Youth Orchestra for about 20 years. BRSO members serve as instructors and mentors to the young musicians, providing inspiration for their further musical development. For most of the young musicians – many of whom dream of turning their passion into a profession – working continuously with professionals opens up a whole new world: they discover how diverse the professional life of an orchestra musician can be. Sir Simon Rattle took over this mentorship programme, which had been shaped by Mariss Jansons and various BRSO guest conductors, in the 2023/2024 season. After Iván Fischer’s planned collaboration had to be cancelled in 2022 due to the pandemic, he will now take over the BLJO’s working and concert activities for this season.
