Sergei Rachmaninoff’s popular Symphonic Dances were the composer’s last work, dedicated to the Philadelphia Orchestra and its then-chief conductor Eugene Ormandy, who premiered the composition in 1921. The three movements combine energetic rhythmic sections, reminiscent of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, with some of Rachmaninoff’s lushest harmonies. The work, which Rachmaninoff himself considered his best, includes several quotations from his earlier compositions and can be regarded as a summing-up of his entire career as a composer.
