From 1708 to 1712, Georg Philipp Telemann initially expressed his art as concertmaster in the princely “Cammer-Music” of Eisenach, before soon afterwards developing his work as court conductor and “secretary”. Entrusted with the establishment of a court chapel in the residence of Johann Wilhelm of Saxony-Eisenach, he succeeded in bringing a small but extremely virtuoso ensemble to fruition. Telemann's places of activity included the Georgenkirche in Eisenach and Wilhelmsthal Castle, where he premiered over 60 cantatas, serenades and church music. On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of his death in 2017, the mandolinist Alon Sariel developed a concert program entitled “Telemandolin” – as a kind of homage to this exceptional composer. The mandolin is an instrument of delicate elegance and in a way represents the echo of the Baroque era; it is an embodiment of melancholy and the epitome of the splendor of past centuries. The mandolin played an important role as part of the basso continuo - but Telemann did not use it as a solo instrument. The arrangements include a French overture, an Italian concerto, a chamber partita and a solo fantasy - Alon Sariel thus combines a wide variety of styles, retaining the baroque character of the compositions and at the same time expanding Telemann's almost incomprehensible sound cosmos.
