‘I think it’s safe to conclude that another new countertenor superstar has arrived, and he’s found just the right ensemble to work with,’ concluded Gramophone’s critic following the release in 2024 of Carlo Vistoli’s recording of Vivaldi’s famous Stabat Mater setting and Nisi Dominus with the Akademie für Alte Musik. Its reprises both works this evening, placed together with JS Bach’s contemplative solo cantata Ich habe genug and three superb instrumental works.

Giulio Caccini, born in 1551, most likely in Rome, channelled heightened emotions into his solo songs. He understood the artistic and commercial value of The New Music, as he titled his 1602 collection of monodies, as did the other composers in La Venexiana’s concert. The Italian vocal ensemble, founded almost 30 years ago, comes to this repertoire with a near-supernatural understanding of its imagery and expressive language.

Music for the Moment

Beethoven’s radical transformation of the string quartet as a genre for the expression of profound human emotions speaks with overwhelming force Quatuor Ébène’s programme. The French ensemble continues its Beethoven series at Wigmore Hall with the first of three works commissioned by Count Andreas Razumovsky in 1805, following its complex musical argument with the transcendental power of the composer’s Op. 130 with its original finale, the Everest-like ‘Great Fugue’.

Under Your Wing, an evolving songs project, is named after a piece that was originally performed in 2014 by vocalist Norma Winstone and broadcast on BBC Radio 3. The eponymous song’s lyrics were written by Mike Walker and its music composed by Trish Clowes, described by DownBeat magazine as ‘an improviser to be reckoned with’. Their lunchtime programme, with Ross Stanley on piano, will include vibrant new works and fresh arrangements.

The Royal College of Music Junior Department offers advanced training to young musicians aged 8-18, providing individually-tailored programmes of instrument/voice/composition lessons, supported by chamber music, orchestra, choir and musicianship classes. This concert will feature performances from some of the RCMJD’s leading soloists, together with the winners of the RCMJD 2026 Chamber Music Prize.

Kindred spirits Matthew Barley and Mishka Rushdie Momen share a refreshing attitude to thinking about and performing music, always ready to reject tired conventions yet alive to the essential spirit that unites the best of past and present. Their programme revels in the cello’s singing line, present in Barley’s elegant transcriptions of Lieder by Robert Schumann and the lyrical warmth and expressive gravity of Brahms’s First Cello Sonata.

One of today’s finest Lieder duos presents two programmes of Robert Schumann. ‘This is an album to treasure and to savour’, wrote Gramophone of their first Schumann disc, ‘and to listen to again and again’; while for the Financial Times, ‘accompanied by his regular partner in song, [Christian Gerhaher] achieves a near-perfect synthesis between words and music, singing his native German poetry with an eloquence that would be hard to surpass today, or at any time’.
