In the summer of 1917, Sergei Prokofiev played a trick on all those who had previously denounced him as a merciless futurist by composing his first symphony as a homage to Joseph Haydn and giving it the title "Symphonie Classique", "out of high spirits, to annoy the philistines", as he later revealed.
