In the summer of 1917, Sergei Prokofiev played a trick on all those who had previously denounced him as a merciless futurist by composing his first symphony as a homage to Joseph Haydn and giving it the title "Symphonie Classique", "out of high spirits, to annoy the philistines", as he later revealed. The Swiss composer Frank Martin felt magically attracted by the old language, inspired by Hans Sachs, in Hugo von Hofmannsthal's "Jedermann". For ...
