Finnish mythology and the great Kalevala epic were a great inspiration for Sibelius. In his Lemmikäinen suite, he portrays Lemmikäinen, a young, heroic warrior and one of the most important figures in the Finnish national epic. The music follows Lemmikäinen on an adventure, to a distant island, down into the realm of the dead and finally his triumphant return.
