After the premiere of Beethoven's Symphony No. 2, a critic wrote that the symphony resembled a "wounded dragon writhing in agony before bleeding to death in the fourth movement". There were so many unexpected musical jokes in the new symphony that the critics did not know what to think. Today, fortunately, we know how to appreciate Beethoven's harsh humor.
