The string trio is usually formed by a violin, viola and cello. There are also other, rarer formations, such as these unexpected trios: two violins and a viola, then two violins and a double bass. Dvořák's Terzetto is the pinnacle of the composer's chamber music output, and he played the viola part himself when the work was first performed.
