This lecture looks at the story of a remarkable book published in 1539 called In Chaldaicam Lingua. It was published by Theseo Ambrogio. Ambrogio also had an eccentric uncle who was an inventor and had invented a brand new kind of bagpipe, he included the designs for his Uncle’s Bagpipe in his new book of prayers. As well as the details of a seance he held with the devil…complete with the devil’s answer. Sophie Matthews is a musician and her interest in this book came through the musical side. As part of the lecture she has a reconstruction of the Uncle’s Bagpipe to play for you, as well as an original copy of the book.

This lecture provides a colourful introduction to the secret world of our 2000-mile inland waterway network and looks at all aspects of their exceptional artistic, architectural and engineering vernacular. Features range from sweeping aqueducts to tiny bollards; from colourful historic narrowboats to ‘Roses and Castles’ artwork; from grand World Heritage Sites to quirky listed buildings. A well-known architectural historian once described our canals as a ‘poor man’s art gallery’.

On Thursday 17th October join Luton Town legend Mick Harford, Manager Rob Edwards plus David Pleat for a walk through the park into Harpenden to raise awareness of and funds for prostate cancer research. Ron Hedley and his supporters in the project aim to walk in every County which plays Over 60s/Over70s County Cricket. So far they have completed 29 walks and raised £48000, raising awareness of a disease which is the biggest killer of men in the UK.
