San Diego Early Music Society

San Diego, CA, United States

The San Diego Early Music Society (SDEMS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the appreciation and performance of music from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. Established in 1981, the Society has been instrumental in enhancing the cultural landscape of the San Diego area by presenting concerts featuring internationally acclaimed musicians. SDEMS prides itself on its mission to showcase musical masterpieces from roughly 1200 to 1800, performed on period instruments and in accordance with historical practice. The Society's programming includes a diverse array of world-class vocal and instrumental soloists, ensembles, and chamber orchestras, offering audiences an authentic experience of early music repertoire from various countries and periods. Throughout its history, SDEMS has maintained a significant presence in San Diego's musical scene. The Society's concerts have featured a rich roster of distinguished artists, including Emma Kirkby, Anthony Rooley, Jordi Savall, Kuijken Quartet, Trevor Pinnock, Paul O’Dette, The Tallis Scholars, Baltimore Consort, Piffaro, Concerto Köln, Academy of Ancient Music, Orlando Consort, Ensemble Caprice, Jean Rondeau, Le Poème Harmonique, and Europa Galante. In addition to its concert series, the Society has fostered a community of early music enthusiasts through grassroots music-making and educational outreach. Members have historically gathered for an annual weekend workshop on Mount Palomar, engaging in master classes, impromptu sessions, and socializing amidst beautiful surroundings. These events have been characterized by a shared passion for music and the joy of playing handmade instruments. The Society's outreach extends beyond its membership to the wider San Diego community, including school visits by both members and performers. These educational initiatives have involved performances, demonstrations of period instruments, and interactive discussions, often bridging the gap between early music and contemporary references to engage younger audiences. As it continues to celebrate its rich history and dedication to early music, the San Diego Early Music Society remains a vital part of San Diego's cultural identity, inviting the community to explore and enjoy the sounds of the past brought to life in the present.
