Desperate Journalist return to Esquires after a sell out show back in January 2022. The band formed in 2013 in North London. Their self released ‘Cristina’ EP and energetic early live shows soon caught the attention of ‘most indie man alive’ Simon Williams who promptly signed them to Fierce Panda records. Over a decade and 4 albums later, the post-punk foursome (Jo, Rob, Simon and Caz) have built a growing loyal fanbase around the UK and across Europe. Following on from the success of ‘Maximum Sorrow!’, 2023 saw the band play their biggest shows to date, supporting Suede on their sell out Autofiction tour. The band’s 5th album ‘No Hero’ arrives this September and promises to be both their most ambitious and accessible material to date.

The story of Smoove & Turrell began in the post millennium North East of England with a group of working class lads and a shared passion for soul. Smoove had met keyboardist Mike Porter through the local music scene in Newcastle and recruited him for his ‘Smoove Live’ project for the label Acid Jazz. Around Mike’s house one day they overheard a neighbour singing sublime melodies in his garage with friends which turned out to be none other than a young John Turrell practicing in a band called ‘The Stevies’. After a couple of further sessions ‘scouting’ him they finally knocked on the door and had a chat and hit it off straight away.

Holy Youth Movement ( HYM ) are a 5 piece band hailing from Bristol, consisting of Drums, Bass, Guitar, Keyboards and Vocals. Their sound is a heavy mix of Rock n Roll and Electronica fuelled by Daance Floor Rhythms, driving Bass and a huge wall of Synthesizers and Guitars, all topped off with soaring anthemic Vocals and melodies.

HOLY YOUTH MOVEMENT + Guests

Arthur Brown is synonymous with his 1968 hit “Fire” and the Hammond-driven “Crazy World” line-up which spawned it. However, in 1970, he returned with a new project: the prog-festival freak-show Kingdom Come followed by a varied solo career. Those initial four band albums, by The Crazy World of Arthur Brown and by Kingdom Come are now considered psych rock classics.

Anyone who came to our weekly ‘Loaded’ club night at The Pad (RIP) will have heard us pumping out CC (You Set The Fire In Me) and Nothing But Green Lights on a weekly basis. Tom’s first album, the cult classic ’ We Have Sound’, was (and still is) one of our favourite albums from a period where indie-rock exploded on the airwaves and the dancefloor; a loosely based driving concept album that was a breath of fresh air and shot in the arm at the time. Tom has rarely toured over the years, so for us to be able to get a date here in Bedford is somewhat of a coup.
