2025 sees the 40th anniversary of The Smiths’ legendary second album “Meat is Murder”. Arguably the band’s most controversial release (the band considered it as a protest album), not only did it do more than anything in pop culture to encourage a generation to become vegetarians, it was the first album to introduce Morrissey’s criticism of the Royal Family. Coming a year on from the band’s debut, “Meat Is Murder” showed the band moving it’s musical might to a muscular new sound (whilst still maintaining it’s ability to produce heart-breaking beautiful songs).

The dog has been selectively bred over millennia for various behaviours, sensory capabilities, and physical attributes. Dog breeds vary widely in shape, size, and colour. They perform many roles for humans, such as hunting, herding, pulling loads, protection, assisting police and the military, companionship, therapy, and aiding disabled people. This influence on human society has given them the sobriquet of “man’s best friend”. Through the subliminal powers of the dog, especially that of the “fat” variety, one may even witness the regrowth of one’s hairline.

High energy turbo-rock with an infamously chaotic live show. Furiously hard working and proudly DIY, South-West noisemakers Mother Vulture continue to push the boundaries of what is possible as an unsigned and independent band having sold out headline shows across the UK including the 400 capacity Thekla in Bristol in October 2023. Mother Vulture are loud as hell with soaring vocals, riffs for days and a reputation as one of the greatest live bands in the UK.

KAWALA found the courage to begin again. Together, the North London five-piece have scaled exhilarating heights since vocalist Jim Higson and guitarist Daniel McCarthy’s packed-out, homespun acoustic performances as students. Though the harmonic tenderness of folk is foundational to KAWALA’s sound, it is their instinct for pop music – the kind that is nourished by hooks, highs and a sun-blush glow of optimism for brighter horizons – which came to define this particular magic which expanded far beyond those small rooms. Armed with drummer Ben Batten, guitarist Dan Lee, and bassist Reeve Coulson, KAWALA’s sound befits the scale of their ambition, and their debut album Better With You (2022) reached #29 in the Official Albums Chart.

Should you care to look back over the past two decades of British folk music, one musician in particular stands out for having a singular, idiosyncratic vision that has rarely wavered in style and substance. Jim Moray may have garnered initial attention for his digitally-driven approach to traditional music, but reflecting on his seven albums and numerous production credits it’s clear that imagination and invention are the real cornerstones of his work. The cinematic vision of albums such as Skulk (2012), Upcetera (2016), and his game-changing debut Sweet England (2003) show just how far the old songs can be taken. His arrangements of traditional songs such as ‘Gilderoy’, ‘Horkstow Grange’ and ‘Fair Margaret and Sweet William’ are regarded as amongst the classics of the folk genre, while his treatment of the ballad ‘Lord Douglas’ has become a must-learn for fingerstyle guitarists.

One of the key bands of the U.K. ska revival of the late ’70s and early ’80s, the Beat achieved a near-perfect balance of pop melodies and taut rhythms that made them stars in Britain and won them a worldwide following. The Beat were and still are based in Birmingham, England. They released their debut single, “Tears of a Clown” b/w “Ranking Full Stop,” through the Specials’ 2-Tone label in 1979. The single went Top Ten in the U.K., and they soon struck a deal with Arista to distribute their own Go Feet label. 1980’s I Just Can’t Stop It (released by Sire in the United States) went gold in England on the strength of the single “Mirror in the Bathroom,” and the band’s ferocious performances and clever blend of personal and political lyrics made them stars at home.

The first half of the evening a rare, seated performance by Mirror System, the downtempo and chillout project of System 7’s Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy. This set will open with an excerpt from the seminal album Rainbow Dome Musick, originally released by the pair back in 1979 which played a vital role in the development of the ambient music genre. The distinctive Mirror System sound is based on deep rolling grooves and the subtle blend of rich dreamy electronica and guitar. Their successful debut album was released in 2005 and now their style also incorporates a soft minimal tech-house element.

British Ska and two-tone band Bad Manners have today announced a huge live UK headline tour for November and December 2024. Kicking off in Sheffield the guys will visit Newcastle, Leeds, Southend, Exeter, Southampton, Manchester, London before commencing in Nottingham.

DJ Yoda is a multi-award-winning hip-hop DJ and producer, headlining festivals and clubs around the world. No typical club DJ, his interests lie in finding fresh and unique ways to bring turntables out of the club and getting involved in bespoke collaborations. Working with classical composers to neuroscientists; brass bands to film directors; Dr Dre to Dame Evelyn Glennie; Banksy to Mark Ronson; BBC Radio 4 to the BFI, he reinvigorates his craft with wry invention and humorous intent.

Martin McAloon is known as the *bassist of British Art-Pop heros Prefab Sprout*. Martin will be performing a large selection of hit songs from Prefab Sprout’s extensive archive celebrating over 40 years of the band and his brother Paddy’s writing.

From their earliest days as a noisy, politicised ceilidh band in the late Seventies, Oysterband have never stopped evolving or providing soundtrack to the changing times. The band released what now stands as their final album in 2022, the acclaimed ‘Read The Sky’, which found the band taking a stand for their environmental beliefs. Most recently, Oysterband undertook an extensive tour of Europe, plus a special “Decades” tour across the UK where they explored their huge back catalogue in greater depth.

Surfacing from a 2-year hiatus, Adam Gibbons aka Lack of Afro, returned in 2023 to reclaim his crown as the king of modern funk and soul. His album Square One saw him in triumphant & defiant mood, with lead single Loving Arms finding its place on the BBC 6 Music playlist – an impressive, if not a ‘surprising-it-took-so-long’ first in a career spanning close to 18-years. Off the back of that success, Lack of Afro now sets his sights on a return to the stage, announcing a 17-date UK tour this November.

Acclaimed UK Singer songwriter Vinny Peculiar is coming to Exeter Phoenix to perform an intimate acoustic duo show featuring songs from his new album ‘How I Learned to Love the Freaks’ and tracks from his fourteen album back catalogue.

Variously described as – ‘an under sung national treasure’ [UNCUT] – ‘a warm-hearted Morrissey’ [Q Magazine] and ‘If there is a better singer song writer in the UK we’ve yet to find them, he is the missing link between Jarvis Cocker and Roger McGough’ [Irish Times] His previous work associations include Bill Drummond [KLF] and his various bands have included ex members of The Smiths, Oasis, Aztec Camera & The Fall. He’s also written toured and recorded as Parlour Flames, the band he formed in 2013 with ex-Oasis rhythm guitarist Bonehead.

One of Exeter’s most well loved singer songwriters, Sarah Yeo will perform her home town show at Exeter Phoenix to celebrate the launch of her new album ‘The Wisdom of the Wind.’ The recording is a 14 track piece of work inspired by the ambitions to travel to loved and undiscovered places and navigating ways through life, through the eyes of others as well as Sarah’s own point of view. Sonically there are elements of both Folk and Country woven through beautifully captivating lyrics, catchy hooks and soaring melodies. The previous Blues and Roots songwriting finalist will perform some older material, accompanied by her Guitar, then will concentrate on the tracks on ‘The Wisdom of the Wind.’ Audiences new to Sarah’s work can expect an evening of heartfelt songs delivered by Sarah’s “stunning voice” (BBC Introducing) and warm engaging presence.

The story of Smoove & Turrell began in the post millennium North East of England with a group of working class lads and a shared passion for soul.

In 2023 the band delivered their 7th album “Red Ellen” (named after a female labour politician who was instrumental in shaping post war attitudes to social justice). Less electronic an odyssey than their previous album “Stratos Bleu”, but still firmly centred on the dancefloor and with an overwhelmingly optimistic message of love and compassion, “Red Ellen” is tempered as always with the reality of working class life in the North East of England.

The 5.6.7.8’s are an all-female Japanese rockin’ garage trio band from Tokyo who play the UK every so often. The band consists of Yoshiko Fujiyama on guitar and lead vocal, Chellio Panther Omo on bass and Sachiko on drums.

Released in October, 1984 Bruce Watson remembers the time very well, amid the nationwide strife back in the UK, fully in the grip of the Miners Strike: “We started work on Steeltown back in June 1984 at Abba’s studio. My Dad was a miner, so what we did was knuckle down to hard work for six weeks”

The Wedding Present have had eighteen UK Top 40 hit singles… not bad for a band that has, from its inception, stubbornly refused to play the record industry’s game. It all started in 1985 when David Lewis Gedge boarded a National Express coach in London with 500 records packed into a pair of his mother’s suitcases and, in this fashion, delivered the band’s debut single Go Out And Get ‘Em, Boy! to a distribution company in Yorkshire. That pioneering spirit has been at the core of the band’s philosophy ever since. From George Best, “an unmitigated delight” [NME], the first full-length release on their own Reception Records onwards, the band has charted an appealing, if often eccentric, course of its very own.

Together these dazzling musicians create musical magic; dynamic and unique “Ancient Northumbrian Futurism”.

This Autumn term we will be focusing on dance and physical theatre. Aimed at dancers/movers and makers who want to expand their dance/movement practice and gain skills in physical theatre, and theatre practitioners/makers who would like to explore physicality and movement.
