In Dani Rowe’s gorgeously wrought world premiere, 36-year-old Marilyn Monroe looks back at her life and memories through the only lens that matters: her own.

Marilyn features an original score by Shannon Rugani, iconic costumes by Emma Kingsbury, and an arresting set design by Emma Kingsbury and David Finn. This full-length ballet promises powerful storytelling, fusing realism and dreams.

In one of the most beloved classical ballets of all time, a small-town girl falls in love with a visiting stranger who betrays her. When she dies of grief, her spirit joins that of other wronged women, known as the Wilis. They band together to fight against those who have hurt them, forcing Giselle to choose between vengeance and love. The world premiere of this new adaptation choreographed by Tiit Helimets and Dani Rowe is an otherworldly ballet about hope, heartbreak, and forgiveness.

Join Marie and her Nutcracker Prince as the mischievous Drosselmeier sends them on a magical adventure. Brave toy soldiers battle villainous mice, candy canes leap and snowflakes whirl, all to Tchaikovsky’s wonderous score – and don’t forget about a Portland Holiday favorite, Mother Ginger!

Hansel and Gretel’s black-and-white world explodes with color—and candy—when they meet a witch in the woods in this hit ballet from Australian choreographer Loughlan Prior.

Featuring an original score from Claire Cowan and a captivating silent-film-aesthetic, this fresh take on the famous fairy tale delivers the perfect amount of October spookiness.

We close the season with the second installment of Made in Portland lovingly crafted for the cultural explorers that make our city great. Like fine wine and food, ballet is ever evolving, and it is our pleasure to lead the way with three locally made world premieres. Adding to the OBT repertory this season are Louisville Ballet Resident Choreographer Andrea Schermoly, freelance choreographer named Dance Magazine’s Top 25 to Watch, Rebecca Margolick, and OBT’s own rising dance maker Makino Hayashi and producer Charlotte Nash. AND in a special partnership we are pleased to shine light on one of this city’s most respected student companies, The Jefferson Dancers.

Made In Portland

OBT School’s Annual School Performance celebrates the technical and artistic achievement of its students including the OBT2 preprofessional ensemble. Many of the advanced dancers are on the cusp of a professional career. This program includes Katarina Svetlova’s Snow White, George Balanchine’s Serenade, and Katarina Svetlova’s Les Petits Sylphs et Les Poets. We invite you to join us for our annual spring performance and be introduced to the talented dancers of the future.

OBT Artistic Director Dani Rowe’s dramatic one-act ballet Wooden Dimes launches audiences into the tumultuous relationship of 1920’s-era chorus girl Betty Fine and her husband Robert, a passion ultimately ripped apart by resentment and jealousy. Originally produced as a film during the pandemic for San Francisco Ballet’s digital season, Wooden Dimes will be brought to life on stage in this exciting premiere featuring the OBT Orchestra with Guest Conductor and Wooden Dimes Composer, James M. Stephenson.

Throw open the window and escape to Neverland with Wendy, John, Michael, and the one and only wild-child, Peter Pan. Trey McIntyre’s highly praised take on the boy who refused to grow up is a playful and thrilling interpretation of J.M. Barrie’s 1911 novella that juxtaposes childhood whimsy with the weighty responsibilities of adulthood. ‘Pan features spectacular flying sequences, swashbuckling sword fights, giant puppets, and of course, Tinker Bell! Set to a soaring score by Sir Edward Elgar, arranged by founding OBT Orchestra Music Director Niel DePonte, with elaborate sets by Thomas Boyd and colorful, punk-fashion inspired costumes from Broadway great Jeanne Button, this magical ballet is sure to enthrall audiences of all ages!

A cursed princess seeks salvation in the loving arms of a noble prince . . . A kaleidoscope of swans dance to music that makes the heart soar . . . An evil villain upends the romance of a lifetime . . . There is no ballet that captures our collective imagination more than Swan Lake. It is a must-see for the uninitiated, and a classic for ballet lovers everywhere.
