Trio Gaspard has championed the entire breadth of piano trio repertoire to become one of the most sought-after trios of its generation, praised for its unique and fresh approach to the score. ‘A truly refreshing performance! Richly coloured, honest, full of joy and with good agogics! This trio belongs to another league! Ensemble magazine. Founded in 2010, the trio’s members hail from Germany, Greece, and the UK. As well as exploring well-known classics, the players work with contemporary composers and research seldom-played masterpieces. Committed to commissioning new works, in this concert they perform a piece they have commissioned from the Moldovan composer and violinist  Patricia Kopatchinskaja. They conclude Manchester Chamber Concert’s season with Schubert’s Trio No. 1 described as  pouring out a stream of spontaneous melody. From its soaring opening theme to the sublimated echoes of Viennese popular music in the finale, the music exudes life-affirming energy.

The award winning Leonkoro Quartet are currently BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists. Based in Berlin, in 2022 they were bestowed with the highly prestigious Jürgen Ponto Foundation Music Prize, a biennial award recognizing outstanding String Quartets, won first prize at both the International String Quartet Competition, held at London’s Wigmore Hall, and  the Concours International de Quatuor à Bordeaux and also received the Merito String Quartet award . In March 2024, the Leonkoro Quartet gained the Young Talent Award of the Concertgebouw Amsterdam .In this concert they perform Ravel’s String Quartet which they have recently recorded .Alfred Brendel described this quartet as “already one of the finest; perfectly unanimous colourful and original”.

Pixels Ensemble is a versatile group of chamber music players with a shared interest in performing the finest repertoire, from the classical period to the present day. Its players are all established soloists, chamber musicians, recording artists, orchestral principals and explorers of contemporary music. Formed in 2016 by pianist and director Ian Buckle, the group appears in a wide range of line-ups and combinations, lending itself to innovative programming and enabling huge variety within individual concerts. The are performing a work by Rebecca Clarke who is described as one of the most distinguished British female composers of the inter-war generation . In addition they offer Elgar’s Piano Quintet, described by the Gramophone magazine as “big chamber music, with at times an almost orchestral sonority to it.” Their programme is completed with a classic Mozart piano concerto providing an intimate chamber music quality.

Reflection of Silence is a collaboration between four musicians from different backgrounds, from rock to Iranian music, with a passion in the art of creative improvisation in Iranian & Kurdish music and a contemporary approach to a set of ancient Kurdish pieces from different parts of the Kurdistan region. Formed under the midnight sun in Lofoten in 2005, the Engegård quartet has become one of Norway’s most sought after ensembles. Their bold fresh interpretation of classical repertoire, combined with their deep attachment to their Scandinavian roots has attracted international acclaim. Following the sellout success last season of the performance of Danish folk music at MCCS by the Danish Quartet, the Engegård quartet will perform Norwegian Folk music for string quartet. Their programme also includes a work which was premiered in 2024 and specially composed for the Engegård quartet by the leading British composer Julian Anderson,  currently Professor of Composition and Composer in Residence at Guildhall School of Music & Drama .In addition they offer classical chamber music repertoire by Mendelssohn and Beethoven’s  “Harp” quartet named after the pizzicato sections which are reminiscent of the plucking of a harp. This is an opportunity to experience a wide range of experiences in the genre of chamber music.

Kayhan Kalhor’s Lost in the Desert Sky is a tribute to Mohammad-Reza Shajarian, the Iranian singer who passed away in 2020. The title refers to the 2000 album Night Silence Desert, a collaboration between Shajarian, Kalhor and other big names in Iranian music. In this new work, which was created during the covid-19 pandemic and has only started recently to go around the world, Kayhan Kalhor once again seeks out the spheres of Khorasan.  He explores the classical poetry of Saadi Shirazi and introduces a number of young musicians to the audience, together with vocalist Hadi Hosseini who was a student of the late Shajarian.

Pianist Vesselin Stanev and flautist Eva Oertle perform a concert celebrating music by female composers from Fanny Mendelssohn to Mélanie Bonis, alongside Brahm’s Sonata No. 2 in E flat major, a piece originally written for clarinet.

Embarking on their first-ever UK and European tour, the Moroccan rock band Meteor Airlines is set to captivate audiences with their unique “Amazigh Rock” sound. From Tinghir in southeastern Morocco, a city famous for its stunning Atlas landscapes, Meteor Airlines infuses their music with profound cultural, historical, and environmental significance.

The AGDAL tour, named after their 2024 album, is a tribute to the rich heritage and ecological wisdom of Morocco’s Amazigh communities. This album explores climate vulnerabilities, resilience, and traditional Amazigh environmental knowledge. “Agdal,” a term rooted in Amazigh culture, symbolises an ancient system of sustainable land and water management, reflecting the band’s commitment to preserving cultural and natural heritage amidst the climate crisis.

As a tight, longstanding jazz ensemble, Yellowjackets has explored a universe all its own of electroacoustic soundscapes in its nearly four-decade history. Since the band’s eponymous 1981 debut album, Yellowjackets has consistently forged ahead with innovative and challenging artistic statements. For Jackets XL, its 25th album and fourth for Mack Avenue Music Group, the band continues to stretch and reinvent itself with an exciting, full-bodied collaboration with the superb WDR Big Band of Cologne, Germany. The project combines the shapeshifting, multiple GRAMMY® Award-winning quartet with the renowned big band, re-imagining well-known band originals with dynamic new arrangements that feature twists and turns, textures and colors, moving harmonies and bold solos.

Britain’s Got Talent alumni and finalist Tom Ball has announced three UK shows for later this year, across October and November. Dubbed ‘Curtain Call’, in line with his debut studio album, out earlier this month on Westway Music, Tom’s Autumn shows will see him head to Southend Palace Theatre, Manchester Stoller Hall and London Leicester Square Theatre.

The announcement comes after Tom, who also received the coveted Golden Buzzer on America’s Got Talent, embarked on a 14 date debut solo tour across the UK earlier this year. Having given up his day job as a drama and music teacher, Tom is now carrying out his childhood dream of being a singer. His first TV experience on BGT saw him described as‘the best singer Britain’s Got Talent has seen in 16 years’ by Amanda Holden. Tom’s charisma, infectious energy and talent was clear, and seeps through in every performance of Tom’s to this day.

Max Richter is the composer of music for dozens of feature films and documentaries. The European Film Academy voted him the best film composer in 2008. He changed the music of Antonio Vivaldi in the spirit of minimalism and postmodernism. Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi, The Four Seasons is one of Richter’s most famous works. After its release in 2012, the recording topped the iTunes Classical Music charts in over 20 countries.

Named after the fine English composer and violist Frank Bridge, the history of the Bridge Quartet , formed over thirty years ago , has been sprinkled with “discoveries” of English quartet repertoire. They are completing their recordings of the full cycle of Yorkshire-born Arnold Cooke’s (1906–2005) Quartets. They willl premiere his work at Manchester Chamber Concerts Society with Quartet No. 4, a piece that is by turns solidly constructed, inventively contrapuntal, lyrical, and energetic.

Join this Estill Voice Training Introductory Workshop led by Estill Master Trainers Ashleigh Dowler and Maple Yu. See how the voice works, tune your ears to a new world of vocal colours and get a taster feel of the model. The workshop will explore the thirteen figures for voice and also the six voice qualities: Speech, Falsetto, Sob, Twang, Opera and Belt.

This workshop is beneficial for any voice user, whether you are a singer, actor, choral directors, speech and language therapists or public speakers, this is for you! Together you will explore the Estill model and give you an overview of how the voice works by looking at the anatomy and physiology of the vocal mechanism. There will also be an Open Session where you can sign-up to receive direct coaching on a section of a song or spoken piece from trained and accredited Estill Master Trainers. There will also be time for questions throughout the day and have a dedicated Q&A session.

Estill Voice Training Introductory Workshop

Set in the Vienna-like city of Utopia, this film follows the political and personal consequences of an anti-Semitic law to expel the city’s Jews. Pushed onto trains with whatever belongings they could carry, forced against their will into an uncertain future, these scenes seem eerily prescient today. 

The film had its final screening in Amsterdam in 1933, as a protest against the Nazis – after which it was thought that every copy had been destroyed. Miraculously, in 2015 a complete print of the film was discovered in a Paris flea market. Beautifully restored by the Austrian Film Archive – and almost exactly a century after its Vienna premiere – this disturbing and unique film now has its first screening in Manchester.

The Seeger Sessions Revival

The ORA singers present a concert themed around ‘the passing of the Year’, centred around Jonathan Dove’s song-cycle of the same name for double choir and piano, alongside Renaissance songs celebrating sacred feast days, poetry for each season and new work from Manchester-based composer Emily Pedersen, and BBC Philharmonic composer-in-residence Tom Coult.

In this edition, Manchester Camerata continues exploring the unlikely friendship between Mozart and Leutgeb, one of the finest horn players of his time. Leutgeb frequently found himself the target of his composer’s playful jokes. There’s a fun yet challenging nature to these pieces, in particular, Concerto No.4 during the 3rd movement showcases a musical game of ‘catch me if you can’, where the orchestra ‘chases’ the horn player who is always a step ahead!
