Fast becoming a holiday tradition for audiences around the country, this is a Christmas spectacular like no other – Down for the Count’s 30-piece big band with strings is one of the largest swing bands currently touring the UK. Beethoven’s late sonatas sit at the centre of this rich programme of masterpieces, not the least of which is the ricercar that Bach performed for Frederick the Great in Potsdam in 1747. “Old Bach of Leipzig” improvised on the King’s theme while using a newly developed fortepiano; the finished composition can thus lay claim to be the first major piano work.

Canadian nuevo-flamenco guitarist Jesse Cook has announced a pair of UK dates for Autumn 2025 at both Manchester’s Stoller Hall and London’s Cadogan Hall after numerous sell out shows across the country last year.

Celebrated for his vast catalogue of intricate and original material, Cook’s concerts resonate deeply with audience members of all backgrounds and age groups. Hesitant when it comes to labelling his eclectic style of music, Cook comments, “I don’t think naming it is important. Beautiful harmonies and voices, both traditional and contemporary, resonate together. Inspired by Katherine May’s bestselling book ‘Wintering’, a new piece from composer Samantha Fernando asks: what if we made peace with the cold, dark days instead of running away?

The pianist Vesselin Stanev, who is originally from Varna (Bulgaria), studied at the Music Academy in Sofia, with Dmitri Bashkirov at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, with Alexis Weissenberg and at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris. Further inspiration came from Peter Feuchtwanger in London. The Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and the Concours Marguerite Long – Jacques Thibaud saw him as a prize-winner. He regularly performs in major concert halls in Europe, such as the Wigmore Hall in London, the Philharmonie Berlin, the Gewandhaus Leipzig or the Salle Gaveau in Paris. He also travels to the Nordic countries, to Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, Russia and Japan. He devotes particular attention to chamber music, for example with the violinist Ekaterina Frolova, the flautist Eva Oertle or the cellist Zoltán Despond. He has made numerous CD recordings for RCA, Sony Classical and the Bulgarian label Gega New.

Tanita Tikaram will make her long-awaited return to Manchester with a rare performance at Stoller Hall on 18 November 2025! Rising to fame at just 18, Tikaram became known for her remarkable voice and for challenging the music stereotypes of the late 1980s and early 90s. Her debut album ‘Ancient Heart’ sold over 4 million copies, earning her a global following that remains loyal today. Across nine studio albums, Tikaram’s music and collaborations have reflected her deep engagement with themes of humanity and politics.

Acclaimed Grammy Award-winning mandolinist, singer, songwriter, composer, and MacArthur Fellow recipient of the prestigious “Genius Grant”, Chris Thile is a multifaceted musical talent, described by The Guardian as “that rare being: an all-round musician,” and hailed by NPR as a “genre-defying musical genius.” Thile is a founding member of the highly influential string bands Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek, and has collaborated with countless luminaries from Yo-Yo Ma to Fiona Apple to Brad Mehldau. For four years, Thile hosted public radio favorite Live from Here with Chris Thile (formerly known as A Prairie Home Companion). With his broad outlook, Thile creates a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike, giving the listener “one joyous arc, with the linear melody and vertical harmony blurring into a single web of gossamer beauty” (New York Times).

Bernard Butler, Norman Blake and James Grant are three established and respected musicians. Norman, a centrifugal force in Teenage Fanclub, Bernard, renowned for his production and songwriting with myriad artists and James, best known as the songsmith of Love And Money. For Butler, Blake & Grant their eponymous LP brings a beautiful conclusion to 3 years of casual acquaintance, impromptu performances and late – night rambles in the sitting room of Norman Blake’s Clyde Valley cottage.

In one of Manchester Camerata’s most ambitious concerts this season, they present the world premiere of a new composition by Laurence Osborn, alongside Mozart’s Divertimento in D and Mozart’s Symphony No. 35 ‘Haffner’. ‘Haffner’ will be performed from memory with the players telling stories through movement and dance alongside Company Chameleon, a world-renowned dance company based in Manchester, whose work has been described as “a brilliant and moving piece of social commentary in the medium of dance”.

Following a revered debut at The Roundhouse in April 2024, a string of sold out performances and widespread critical acclaim, The Songs of Joni Mitchell returns this autumn with an extraordinary lineup of artists paying tribute to one of the greatest songwriters of all time.

Jesca Hoop, Kate Stables (This Is The Kit) and Lail Arad, acclaimed singer-songwriters in their own right, will perform intimate interpretations of their favourite Joni Mitchell songs in a loving ode to one of the finest songwriters of all time. They will be joined by Richard Sears on piano.

Gordon Chapman-Fox’s Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan project sees a bold visual aesthetic and striking retro-futuristic audio identity seamlessly melded together into one evocative musical package. Over five albums and one EP, Chapman-Fox impeccably soundtracks the construction and growth of a northern English community from the mid 1970’s to early 1980’s, rendered in shimmering arpeggios and soaring, euphoric leads.

Having been embraced by both the mainstream media (BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 6, RTE) and niche publications alike, as well as hitting both the UK album charts and multiple end of year lists (Piccadilly Records, Bleep, Electronic Sound), it’s clear that there is no end of appreciation for the impeccably produced, immersive drift of Warrington-Runcorn’s sound.

While all of the entries in his canon have garnered significant praise, it was 2023’s The Nation’s Most Central Location that really put Warrington-Runcorn on the map with Electronic Sound naming it album of the year alongside many other accolades.

There are fewer stories more heartfelt and inspiring in music than Brad’s. Though only at the beginning of a promising career, there have been enough peaks and troughs that would discourage the most hardened artists. Growing up initially in Bootle, a working-class suburb of Liverpool, a problematic family situation led to Brad and his twin brother being placed into foster care at the age of seven. In this more stable environment, Brad’s natural gift of music was given room to blossom.

This programme includes the famous Antonio Vivaldi cycle “The Four Seasons”, re-interpreted by cult contemporary composer Max Richter and performed by the extraordinary Mystery Ensemble in an intimate and relaxing atmosphere.

Max Richter is the composer of music for dozens of feature films and documentaries and was voted the best film composer of 2008 by to the European Film Academy.

Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi, The Four Seasons is one of Richter’s most famous works, recreating  the music of Antonio Vivaldi in the spirit of minimalism and postmodernism. After its release in 2012, the recording topped the iTunes Classical Music charts in over 20 countries.

Gorton Philharmonic’s Summer Concert will be a celebration of friendship, opening with the overture to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg – Wagner’s only comic opera. Gorton Philharmonic President Stephen Threlfall will then be joined by long-time friend and BBC Philharmonic violinist Tom Bangbala to perform Brahms’ Double Concerto, written to reconcile a broken friendship with the violin virtuoso Joachim. Mont Juic (Suite of Catalan dances), jointly composed by Lennox Berkeley and Benjamin Britten after they’d met in Barcelona, will add a touch of Iberia to proceedings before Elgar’s most loved work, his Variation on an original theme ‘Enigma Variations’– fourteen musical portraits of his close friends and acquaintances – brings their 2024/2025 season to a close in majestic style.

In this edition, Manchester Camerata continues exploring the unlikely friendship between Mozart and Leutgeb, one of the finest horn players of his time. Leutgeb frequently found himself the target of his composer’s playful jokes. There’s a fun yet challenging nature to these pieces, in particular, Concerto No.4 during the 3rd movement showcases a musical game of ‘catch me if you can’, where the orchestra ‘chases’ the horn player who is always a step ahead!

Trio Gaspard has championed the entire breadth of piano trio repertoire to become one of the most sought-after trios of its generation, praised for its unique and fresh approach to the score. ‘A truly refreshing performance! Richly coloured, honest, full of joy and with good agogics! This trio belongs to another league! Ensemble magazine. Founded in 2010, the trio’s members hail from Germany, Greece, and the UK. As well as exploring well-known classics, the players work with contemporary composers and research seldom-played masterpieces. Committed to commissioning new works, in this concert they perform a piece they have commissioned from the Moldovan composer and violinist  Patricia Kopatchinskaja. They conclude Manchester Chamber Concert’s season with Schubert’s Trio No. 1 described as  pouring out a stream of spontaneous melody. From its soaring opening theme to the sublimated echoes of Viennese popular music in the finale, the music exudes life-affirming energy.

He recorded three cherished albums between 1969 and 1972 but was almost entirely unknown in his day. After his tragic death in 1974 aged only 26 his music almost disappeared into obscurity. Now, thanks to a massive resurgence of interest and a worldwide re-evaluation of his unique music, Nick Drake has become a national treasure.

The award winning Leonkoro Quartet are currently BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists. Based in Berlin, in 2022 they were bestowed with the highly prestigious Jürgen Ponto Foundation Music Prize, a biennial award recognizing outstanding String Quartets, won first prize at both the International String Quartet Competition, held at London’s Wigmore Hall, and  the Concours International de Quatuor à Bordeaux and also received the Merito String Quartet award . In March 2024, the Leonkoro Quartet gained the Young Talent Award of the Concertgebouw Amsterdam .In this concert they perform Ravel’s String Quartet which they have recently recorded .Alfred Brendel described this quartet as “already one of the finest; perfectly unanimous colourful and original”.

Pixels Ensemble is a versatile group of chamber music players with a shared interest in performing the finest repertoire, from the classical period to the present day. Its players are all established soloists, chamber musicians, recording artists, orchestral principals and explorers of contemporary music. Formed in 2016 by pianist and director Ian Buckle, the group appears in a wide range of line-ups and combinations, lending itself to innovative programming and enabling huge variety within individual concerts. The are performing a work by Rebecca Clarke who is described as one of the most distinguished British female composers of the inter-war generation . In addition they offer Elgar’s Piano Quintet, described by the Gramophone magazine as “big chamber music, with at times an almost orchestral sonority to it.” Their programme is completed with a classic Mozart piano concerto providing an intimate chamber music quality.

Legendary 70’s Tyneside folk-rock pioneers Lindisfarne present a classic five-piece line-up of long-time members fronted by founder-member Rod Clements on vocals, mandolin, fiddle and slide guitar.

Reflection of Silence is a collaboration between four musicians from different backgrounds, from rock to Iranian music, with a passion in the art of creative improvisation in Iranian & Kurdish music and a contemporary approach to a set of ancient Kurdish pieces from different parts of the Kurdistan region. The goal is for the artist and listener to become ecstatically lost.

Formed under the midnight sun in Lofoten in 2005, the Engegård quartet has become one of Norway’s most sought after ensembles. Their bold fresh interpretation of classical repertoire, combined with their deep attachment to their Scandinavian roots has attracted international acclaim. Following the sellout success last season of the performance of Danish folk music at MCCS by the Danish Quartet, the Engegård quartet will perform Norwegian Folk music for string quartet. Their programme also includes a work which was premiered in 2024 and specially composed for the Engegård quartet by the leading British composer Julian Anderson,  currently Professor of Composition and Composer in Residence at Guildhall School of Music & Drama .In addition they offer classical chamber music repertoire by Mendelssohn and Beethoven’s  “Harp” quartet named after the pizzicato sections which are reminiscent of the plucking of a harp. This is an opportunity to experience a wide range of experiences in the genre of chamber music.

The Alkyona Quartet present fresh imaginative interpretations of both well-known and hidden gems of the string quartet repertoire. They are well known for their warm connection to audiences and vivacious performances. They released their debut album, Janáček’s ‘Intimate Letters’ String Quartet in June 2020, which they now perform for Manchester Chamber Concerts Society. This is the ultimate storytelling string quartet – Janacek’s musical love letter to his life’s love. The rest of this programme ranges from  17th Century Henry Purcell to a piece by  Dobrinka Tabakova, former Halle artist-in-residence 2022-2023. The concert opens with one of the  classic “Sun” string quartets by Haydn that earned him the name as “the father of string quartets”.

The Sitkovetsky Trio is a well-established and exceptional piano trio, having previously received the BBC Music Magazine’s Chamber Music Award. This  concert starts with a fresh interpretation of works from Max Bruch’s ‘Eight Pieces’, (originally written for piano, viola and clarinet), that allows each of the trio’s soloist talents to shine through in turn. The concert’s a rare opportunity to hear music by French composer Cècile Chaminade. In 1913, she was awarded the Légion d’Honneur, a first for a female composer. Her Piano Trio No. 2 in A min is a work filled with gorgeous and lyrical melodies, as is the concert’s finale work, Brahms’ Piano Trio No. 2 in C Major.

The Elias String Quartet is celebrated for its deep musical understanding and bold performances. Their ability to convey profound musical meaning, especially across entire quartet cycles, has made them a fixture in the world’s most prestigious concert halls and festivals. They recently toured with a complete Beethoven quartet cycle which they have also recorded. As the finale of the Manchester Chamber Concerts Society’s 25/26, the Elias quartet present an all-Beethoven programme, celebrating the composer’s genius at writing breathtaking, dramatic works for the string quartet. The programme opens with Quartet No.12 in E flat major, one of the last pieces the composer completed before his death, followed by the second of his middle period Opus 59 quartets. Commissioned by Count Razumovsky, these are considered to have been a revolution in music written for the quartet – so completely original that in one stroke they redefined the entire paradigm of the quartet genre.
