Fanny Mendelssohn’s elegantly romantic Overture sets the mood for this concert of classical favourites. The immensely popular cellist Laura van der Heijden returns to BBC NOW with a performance of Martinů’s athletic and folky, yet expressively impassioned Cello Concerto, before conductor Antony Hermus turns puppet-master in Stravinsky’s Petrushka. Petrushka, the rebellious jester falls in love with a Ballerina who falls in love with the Moor in this fated folk story, with the dancing and despairingly flailing puppet cleverly wound into action by Stravinsky’s ingenious rhythm and orchestration.

First up, the UK premiere of Jessie Montgomery’s Coincident Dances. Frenetic energy and a multicultural aural palette radiate in this depiction of the sounds of New York. The second UK premiere comes in the form of Elena Kats-Chernin’s violin concerto Fantasie im Wintergarten, written for tonight’s soloist, Emily Sun. Inspired by a 1920s silent film set in the fairground circus Wintergarten in Berlin, the concerto explores the contrast of love and betrayal – from light to shadow, tango to chaos, virtuosity to suspended lyricism. To close we turn to Huw Watkins’ Second Symphony, written during the pandemic this large scale work, whilst relatively short, packs a punchy delivery of ravishing texture and expansive melody.

Llwch a Llechi will be performed by an ensemble of 10 BBC National Orchestra of Wales musicians, one of Wales’ oldest choirs Côr y Penrhyn (originally formed as a quarrymen’s choir for workers at Penrhyn Quarry, Bethesda), and Gwen using live electronics, including her own hand-built instruments made from recycled natural materials (slate, oak and yew). The project combines elements of experimental electronic music, contemporary orchestral composition, choral composition (specifically informed by North Wales’ working-class tradition of slate quarrymen’s choirs), field recordings and moving image to create a unique and engaging live performance piece.

The bilingual tours will allow you to follow in the footsteps of the characters and to see the exact locations where the banter and bickering, and the laughter and tears take place. BSL (British Sign Language) interpreted tours will be available Sunday morning, 13 October at 9:45am and 11:45am.

We're in Montgomery, Alabama, in the heart of the segregated southern United States, on the 2:30 PM bus, March 2, 1955. Claudette Colvin, a 15-year-old Black teenager, refuses to give up her seat to a White passenger. Despite threats, she remains seated. After being thrown in jail, she decides to sue the city and plead not guilty. No one ever dared to do such a thing at the time. And yet, no one remembers her name.

She caught the ear of critics – Pitchfork likened “Mystery” to “a scratch track from a big-budget 80s studio that’s been smuggled out on reel-to-reel tape” – but Palladino’s output remained slight while she worked as an in-demand session musician for the likes of SBTRKT and Jessie Ware, cycling from one tour to the next.

Her latest album, “like the sky I’ve been too quiet” released in March 2024, is a largely improvised collection of music recorded over three days in London in January 2023 with British jazz artist Shabaka Hutchings on production duties. It features contributions from some of contemporary jazz’s finest musicians with producer Floating Points and multi-instrumentalist Leafcutter John providing eerie electronic textures throughout.

In the 1970s they were invited by Swiss music producer Marcel Cellier to be a part of an album of Bulgarian folk music, Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares. The ensemble became acclaimed worldwide when Ivo Watts-Russell, founder of 4AD re-released the album in 1986. The music has been praised by artists across genres from Frank Zappa to Kate Bush, Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins to Linda Ronstadt. The album’s follow-up Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, Vol II won a Grammy in 1989 with another two volumes following in 1990 and 1998.

He witnessed first-hand the growing popularity of music from Africa, India, Latin America, the Caribbean and Eastern Europe since the 1960s and was one of the protagonists of the ‘world music’ movement of the 1980s.
