South Bay Musical Theatre (SBMT), originally known as Saratoga Drama Group, has been a prominent provider of musical theater in the South Bay Area for nearly 60 years. Established in 1963 within the Saratoga Federated Church, the group initially performed in Richards Hall before moving to the Saratoga Civic Theatre in 1966 due to growing audience numbers. Incorporated as a nonprofit in 1969, the organization has consistently enhanced its production quality, presenting both well-known Broadway classics and lesser-known gems. SBMT has hosted numerous Bay Area premieres, including "Mame" in 1969 and "Hello, Dolly" in 1971. The group also staged special performances like "Amahl and the Night Visitors" during Christmas. In 2009, the organization rebranded to South Bay Musical Theatre to better reflect its mission of reaching broader audiences and elevating production standards. With a commitment to community involvement, each production involves 60 to 100 members contributing to various aspects, from set building to performing, ensuring high-caliber shows that entertain thousands. SBMT continues to uphold its tradition of excellence while adapting to contemporary theatrical landscapes.
