Al who recently relocated to Chandler Arizona from Los Angeles (his home for the last 45 years) is winding down his touring schedule with his long time band The Empty Pockets.

Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto is tense and attention-grabbing from the start, it draws you right in, lets you relax a little, and then ratchets things up in a nail-biting ending.  Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is an epic musical journey that begins with those iconic four da-da-da-daaaa notes. Carlos Simon’s piece, full of shimmering melodies, is inspired by Beethoven’s music and starts the evening with high drama.

Mary Coughlan is often described as the greatest female vocalist that Ireland has ever produced, standing alongside some of the world’s most iconic jazz singers. She’s unique in blending whisky-blurred, smoke-seared, husky notes with the laconic wit of Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee. She draws the line of deep, down and dirty blues singers back to Bessie Smith with the sardonic, bitter-sweet defiance and despair of Edith Piaf. Yet Mary Coughlan delivers it all in a delicious and unapologetic Irish drawl: sceptical, rueful, mournful, melting and ardent for love.

Be transported to Paris in the 1920s with music by the leading composers of the day, Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy. Ravel’s fiery Tzigane for violin and piano is at the heart of this concert. Passionate, fierce, and full of breathless virtuosity, it’s a show-stopper from start to finish. His Sonata for violin and cello has a similar Hungarian flavour to it and was written as a tribute to Debussy, whose sensual works for flute and harp complete this afternoon’s programme.

Mozart’s Violin Concerto is one of those pieces where you hear it and go ‘Oh it’s this one!’ It’s famed for the delicate beauty of its solo violin part and the sparkling exchanges between soloist and orchestra which absolute fizz with musical energy. Schubert’s most popular symphony starts proceedings with a poignancy that seems quite out of a place for the teenager that wrote it, while Beethoven’s Second Symphony ends the evening in lively, upbeat style.

Royal Northern Sinfonia and guest conductor Stefan Geiger join forces once again to bring to life another of Charlie Chaplin’s classics.

Having toured together since 1986 to packed concert halls all over the world, Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham have won the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards – Best Duo Award and been nominated in the Scottish Traditional Music Awards for ’Live Act of the Year’

Aly was a founder member of the ‘Boys of the Lough’ and his passionate fiddle playing has also found its way onto recordings by the likes of Eddi Reader and Richard Thompson. He was responsible for launching ‘The Transatlantic Sessions’ TV series in which both he and Phil continue to feature. Accordion player Phil has been named as one of Scotland’s 25 most influential people and his mastery of the instrument has led to him working with the likes of Mark Knopfler, James Taylor, Rosanne Cash and Midge Ure. In March 2023 they recorded along with the Transatlantic Sessions with Eric Clapton at Abbey Road Studios.

The string trios in the first half include Schubert’s tuneful single movement work and an engaging five movement Serenade, with its spiky scherzo, by Hungarian Ernst von Dohnányi. Gerald Finzi’s short prelude and fugue features in the Eblana trio’s recording of British works. Brahms continues the Hungarian theme in his monumental first piano quartet, which ends with a rollicking Hungarian dance.

In 2018, six musicians joined forces for The John Martyn Project, a one-off sold-out show at The Camden Jazz Café to celebrate the music of the late singer songwriter in a sensitive, poignant manner. Each brought their own story and connection to John’s music, adding to the fabric of the overall experience.

Dustin O’Halloran is an American pianist and composer known as both a solo artist and a member of A Winged Victory for the Sullen. He started out as a member of dreampop band Dēvics before releasing solo work. Dustin’s debut album, Piano Solos (2004), led to a breakthrough when Sofia Coppola invited him to contribute music to her film Marie Antoinette (2006). O’Halloran’s later solo albums include Lumiere (2011), mixed by Jóhann Jóhannsson.

Michael Lamb’s Strictly Smokin’ Big Band returns to The Glasshouse with multi-award winning saxophonist and composer Emma Rawicz. The program will feature Emma on many of her own compositions alongside the SSBB and Alice Grace.

Emma has been making waves on the UK music scene and beyond. At the age of 21 she’s already recorded and released an eagerly awaited debut album ‘Incantation’ made up entirely of her original compositions.  Her second album ‘Chroma’ was released in August 2023.

Adam Wakeman, longtime keyboard & guitar player for Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne, started the project in 2013. On a night off in Germany during a Black Sabbath tour, Adam and Sabbath’s security guard sat at the hotel bar. The security guard asked if Adam could play the Sabbath set on the bar’s piano. Adam thought it would be fun to play the songs as jazz improvised versions then played until the bar staff wanted to go home.

Spiers & Boden first rocketed onto the music scene in 2001, quickly winning a clutch of BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and going on to form and front the extraordinarily successful folk big band Bellowhead, which sold out The Royal Albert Hall several times, provides the theme tune for Radio 4’s The Archers and were recently heard on the soundtrack of BBC 1’s ‘Beyond Paradise’.

Thomas Zehetmair, Royal Northern Sinfonia’s former music director, brings his string quartet to The Glasshouse. You might also recognise viola player Ruth Killius from regular guest appearances with the orchestra.
