A Melodic Odyssey: Celebrating Diverse Music with Skunk Anansie, Supergrass, and More

British alternative quartet Skunk Anansie played what their lead singer, , called clit-rock — an amalgam of heavy metal and Black feminist rage. began singing in high school for a classmate’s band after considering the offer for over a year. Six years after that band broke up, the members of Skunk Anansie (including bass player Cass, guitarist Ace, and drummer Robbie France, who was replaced by Mark Richardson in 1995) met one another by chance. Their name was taken from the West Indian folktales of Anansi the Spider-Man, with a slight change of spelling and “Skunk” added to make the name nastier.

Known for their nervy, melodic indie rock, Britain’s Circa Waves first gained buzz in the 2010s with hooky singles like “Get Away” and “Stuck in My Teeth.” Centered on lead singer/songwriter Kieran Shudall, the band earned favorable comparisons to the Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, and the Vaccines even before they hit the Top Ten with their debut, 2015’s Young Chasers. Without shying away from their influences, the band has matured, and albums like 2017’s Different Creatures, 2019’s What’s It Like Over There? showcase their deepening maturity and knack for crafting their own distinctively infectious, post-punk anthems. In 2020, they reached number four on the U.K. albums chart with Sad Happy and returned in 2023 with Never Going Under.

The ever-evolving musical vehicle for notorious psych-rock musician Anton Newcome, the Brian Jonestown Massacre has endured numerous phases and iterations since arriving in the mid-’90s, becoming something of an independent institution in the process. Early highlights like 1996’s Their Satanic Majesties’ Second Request showed Newcombe’s propensity for melding late-’60s psychedelia with textured shoegaze, while later standouts like 2015’s imaginary soundtrack Musique de Film Imaginé took a more cerebral and experimental approach. Undoubtedly, the band’s most visible period followed the release of the 2004 documentary film DIG!, which focused on the contentious relationship between Newcombe and Dandy Warholds frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor. With the film criticized by members of both groups for what they considered to be an unfair portrayal, the Brian Jonestown Massacre nonetheless survived the media attention and moved into a particularly fertile period of creativity throughout the 2010s. The band’s first release of the next decade was 2022’s Fire Doesn’t Grow on Trees, quickly followed by 2023’s Your Future Is Your Past.

Hailing from Wrexham, Wales, Neck Deep are a pop-punk band whose energetic and hook-driven songwriting has earned them acclaim and chart success on both sides of the Atlantic. Consisting of punk legends, John Reis, guitarist and lead vocals for Rocket from the Crypt, the celebrated scamp Joey Cape from Lagwagon on guitar, Pinch from The Damned, on the skins. Add to our crew Fat Mike, master bassist from NOFX and CJ Ramone from a little band you may have heard of, The Ramones, rounded out by the incomparable crooner, Spike Slawson. When duty calls for one of the Gimmes to perform with their other band, rest assured a traveling Gimme will step in. Jonny “2 Bags” Wickersham from Social Distortion, Jay Bentley from Bad Religion or Stacey Dee from Bad Cop/Bad Cop  are known to fill in and on occasion, Jake Kiley, professional stoner and recreational guitar player from Strung Out hops on tour too. 2020 was a sobre, still, introspective time for many. For HAAi – the Australian-born, London-based DJ and producer – it was no different. For someone so used to spending multiple nights a week in the club, surrounded by sweat, strobes and dancing, lockdown felt particularly weird. “Before the pandemic, I was playing a lot of really long sets. I was so immersed in music all the time,” she says now. “I love touring! I have ADHD, so I feel like I have the stamina to play late shows and go to the airport. So much of how my brain is wired lends itself to the life that I have.” When all of that was taken away, HAAi threw herself into producing, mixing and writing tracks to compensate. “I would never have taken that much time off before.” Now that clubs are open and planes are running, HAAi has spent a lot of time being back in the booth, surrounded by noise and beats and people. It’s where she feels most comfortable, most herself. “You get to play a party where you feel like it’s your birthday party every night,” she says. “It’s important to take breaks now and then. From now onwards, it’s going to be crazy busy.”

Formed in a Melbourne share house in 2016, the Sniffers wrote, recorded and uploaded their first EP, Giddy Up, in the space of 12 hours. They followed with the Big Attraction EP in 2017, which featured the whip smart track I’m Not A Loser, the punching oi punk of Westgate and the pugnacious violence of Mole (Sniff Sniff). These early EPs had a grab bag of influences, from Australian rock to rap to 70s punk, but the sound was all the Sniffers’ own — short, fast, loud and funny.

Combining a DIY punk ethic and big band showmanship they have also been pleasing festival audiences across the UK from Doune the Rabbit Hole , Edinburgh Hogmanay street party, Party at the Palace, TRNSMT, Rewind festival (numerous locations,) Solfest , Valefest and many more. Their recent single releases of DOG FIGHT and Hands go numb have been played extensively on BBC 6 music by Craig Charles and at the end of August they did an interview with the man himself as part of his Jar of ska feature promoting their album Skandemic . reland’s Hothouse Flowers made a name for itself during the late ’80s and early ’90s with a passionate, bombastic fusion of rock & roll with the rootsy sounds of Irish folk and American gospel. The group was founded as a Dublin street-performance act called the Incomparable Benzini Brothers by schoolmates (vocals, keyboards) and Fiachna O’Broainain (guitar), the former of whom had played in forerunner Congress. After winning the Street Entertainers of the Year award in 1985, the Incomparable Benzini Brothers added bassist Peter O’Toole, saxophonist Leo Barnes, and drummer Jerry Fehily and changed their name to Hothouse Flowers.

Maya Hawke is a musician, songwriter, actor and producer. She has released two lauded albums of music to date, Moss (2022) and Blush (2020), both of which showcase her natural gift for songwriting and storytelling, as well as a knack for striking visual presentation with sleeve designs of her own creation. “Thérèse,” the lead single from Moss, garnered global attention with its mesmerizing Brady Corbet-directed video – and tens of millions of streams – and saw Maya make an impressive network TV performance debut on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Maya and her band picked up a slew of rave reviews for sold out shows in the US and EU, as well as support slots for Bright Eyes and Faye Webster.
