It’s been a remarkable career. Mike Peters, frontman of The Alarm, created one of Britain’s best-loved rock bands at the turn of the 1980s. He filled arenas, enjoyed hits with Sixty Eight Guns Spirit Of ’76, and Absolute Reality, and opened for U2 and Bob Dylan. There’s always been much, much more to the man who was awarded an MBE in 2019.

May the Force be with the Orchestra of Opera North as it embarks on a journey through space, time, and the realms of witchcraft. Feel the commanding brass of the Star Wars Imperial March, the haunting strings from Psycho, and the enchanting celeste theme from Harry Potter send tingles down your spine. Conductor Garry Walker will guide us through the programme, unravelling each piece's influences and connections within film music history.

Film Music: From Mahler to Williams

Composed in Russia during one if its darkest times, Prokofiev’s ‘Classical Symphony’ is a glimpse of light, channelling his influences from Classical-era composers Haydn and Mozart. Aptly paired with Prokofiev’s First Symphony is Haydn’s last of 12 ‘London’ symphonies, which brims with all the invention, wit, drama and surprises that characterise the music of the ‘Father of the Symphony’.

Join Huddersfield Choral Society for The Dream of Gerontius, reckoned by many to be the Great English Oratorio. The text, by John Henry Newman, is a poetic meditation on the last moments of the Everyman figure, Gerontius, and his soul’s subsequent journey.

David Pipe concludes the season with York Bowen’s dramatic Fantasia preceding the Welsh composer Rhian Samuel’s meditative The Tender Branch. Bach’s monumental Fantasia & Fugue in G minor is followed by another monument of the repertoire: Reubke’s Sonata on the 94th Psalm.

Hailing from Adelaide, Alana Brook is Assistant Director of Music at Wakefield Cathedral. Her first recital in Huddersfield Town Hall includes a selection of chorale preludes by women composers. Mendelssohn’s stately Sonata No. 2 is at the heart of the programme, with Vierne’s joyous Final at the close.

This short piece explores themes from Brahms’ Violin Concerto, coupled with a modern spirit. Then, head back in time to hear the original composition in full with internationally acclaimed violinist, Clara Jumi Kang.

York Minster’s Director of Music, Robert Sharpe, makes a welcome return to Huddersfield. He opens with a piece by one of his distinguished predecessors, Francis Jackson, and includes Whitlock’s wonderful Fantasie Choral No. 2. We move to France finally, with Vierne’s celebratory Carillon de Westminster.

The Ukrainian concert organist Ewa Belmas brings her transcription of John Williams’ ever-popular music from the Harry Potter saga to life on the Father Willis organ, following her 2024 world tour. With movements including ‘Fawkes the Phoenix’ and ‘The Flying Car’, this will be a concert not to miss!

Originally written as a birthday gift for his wife and now arguably his best-loved orchestral work, Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll is based on music from the third opera in the Ring cycle and serenades us with lush harmonies. Listen out for Siegfried’s horn motif and the forest bird melody. The winner of the 1999 Leeds International Piano Competition, Artur Pizarro gave a spectacular performance of Saint-Saëns’ Second Piano Concerto in Huddersfield last season – expect more fireworks from his fingers this evening in Liszt’s First Concerto.

Handel’s Oratorio Messiah is probably the most celebrated choral work and the Hallelujah Chorus is instantly recognisable. The Huddersfield Choral Society annual Christmas Messiah performance is a Huddersfield tradition, broken only once since 1864. It is also the Choral’s signature piece, with a number of notable recordings beginning with Sir Malcolm Sargent in the 1950s and most recently with Jane Glover (now Dame Jane Glover) in 2010.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw describes her work Entr’acte as taking people ‘through Alice’s looking glass’. This programme certainly feels otherworldly with Shaw’s mesmerising exploration of unexpected harmonies and textures followed by Brahm’s ‘Sextet in G Major’, famously described as ‘ethereal’ by the British musicologist Sir Donald Tovey.

The Polish organist Michał Szostak makes his first visit to Huddersfield Town Hall. A famed improviser, his programme will intersperse three improvisations in varied styles among works by Buxtehude, Bach and Beethoven, including a transcription from Beethoven’s famed Symphony No. 5.
