Mill Valley, CA, United States
Marin Theatre Company (MTC), established in 1966 in Mill Valley, California, by 35 local residents led by Sali Lieberman, has evolved from a grassroots organization, the Mill Valley Center for the Performing Arts (MVCPA), into a premier professional theater in the Bay Area. Initially offering a diverse range of arts, MVCPA shifted to focus exclusively on theater in 1977. Recognizing its broader regional appeal and specialization in theater arts, it was renamed Marin Theatre Company in 1984. MTC achieved professional status in 1987, opening its own theater complex and becoming a key player in the Bay Area's cultural scene. The company has been instrumental in supporting new American playwrights, launching a New Works program in 2004, and establishing two new play prizes in 2007. MTC joined the League of Resident Theatres and the National New Play Network in 2008, further solidifying its reputation for innovative and socially relevant productions. Over the years, MTC has been recognized for transforming from a community to a professional theater, celebrated for its groundbreaking premieres and commitment to new works for the American stage.
