The 39 Steps

Set in 1833 in Ireland, it tells of the British army's campaign to survey the country and in the process, replace the native Gaelic place names with English ones in order to bring about a political union.  

 Against the backdrop of a “hedge school” where the locals are educated in their native Irish, Lieutenant Yolland, a British soldier, falls in love with Maire, a peasant girl - and with Ireland. Their romance sparks displeasure and anger in the Irish and English alike, and when Yolland goes missing, the mutual revenge taken threatens to tear the countryside apart.

On the back of the success of 2023, the Festival returns to Chester for a second year.   As part of the All-England Drama Festival, the weekend brings together many of the region's most talented theatre groups, directors, actors and writers, performing short plays, both old and new.

But the people are getting ready to go out and enjoy themselves – and we follow them as they go to the club, the pub, visiting friends, and learn about their lives and relationships:  sometimes desperate, often funny:   a passionate, poetic and positive portrayal of working class life in the eighties.
