The Little Theatre On The Square, located in Sullivan, Illinois, was founded by Guy S. Little, Jr. and opened its doors in 1957 with a performance of "Brigadoon." Initially operated as a commercial venture, the theatre hosted over 175 renowned stars such as Mickey Rooney, Alan Alda, and Leonard Nimoy until 1978. In 1981, it transitioned to a not-for-profit corporation, overseen by a Board of Trustees representing Central Illinois. As the sole Actors’ Equity Association-affiliated theatre between Chicago and St. Louis, it attracts professional talent nationwide. The theatre has welcomed over 850,000 attendees, including 160,000 for its Theatre For Young Audiences series. Celebrating over 60 years of live performances, the venue underwent an extensive renovation in 2004, enhancing its facilities. The Little Theatre also launched an educational outreach program in 1997, offering dance and drama classes, which expanded to include a touring program, S.T.A.R., in 2004. Recognized by USA Today in 2005 as one of the Top 10 Places to See the Lights Way Off Broadway, it continues to be a cultural landmark in the region.
