Whirlybirds formed in 2016 out of the ashes of The DewDroppers when Joe Gilliland (guitar), Joseph Brenneman (reeds), and Trent Sampson (bass) decided they wanted to keep playing music together. Joined by Seth Daily on drums, they are four friends who bring their love of swinging rhythms and melodies to people all over the state. They combine the small group swing sound of the first half of the 20th century with modern influences of jazz, pop, soul, and funk.

Have you ever dreamed of being the lead singer in a band? Then the Jazz Academy Adult Vocal Workshop is the place for you! Join Jazz Academy teaching artists Jasmine Spitzer and Rachel Azbell alongside a live rhythm section and explore the key components of singing including vocal style and technique, repertoire, band-leading skills and performing with confidence. This workshop is open to all commercial music genres, including jazz, pop, rock, R&B and beyond and will end with a live performance at The Rambling House.

Jazz Girls Columbus, under the direction of the 2024 Artistic Director Nadje Noordhuis, is a free educational event for girls and gender expansive youth in middle and high school, individuals that are currently in college music programs, and all Ohio music educators. Jazz Academy Jam Session: Sonny Side Up

The name ‘Turtle Boat’ is derived from the Geobukseon of the Joseon Dynasty, and represents a yearning to be free of externally-imposed isolation, and a wrath towards insincerity and apathy everywhere. The group utilizes improvisational vehicles written by Abhilasha Chebolu with additional contributions from saxophonist Alex Burgoyne. Though diverse in experience, the ensemble finds common ground through their shared investment in exploring the more introspective side of free playing. In addition to their capacious listening practice (informed equally by Arvo Pärt, Kazumoto Endo, Thingy, and YMCK as much as Ornette Coleman and Paul Motian), Turtle Boat pursues a generous improvisatory dynamic concerned with playing not what is possible, but what is necessary. Tonight, Turtle Boat will be performing their debut recording “Fear is Heavy, I’ve Got Plans …” in its entirety.

Join your Columbus Jazz Orchestra as we experience the iconic melodies of Scott Joplin’s ragtime, the swinging rhythms of Benny Goodman’s big band, the sophisticated sounds of Duke Ellington’s jazz orchestra, and so much more. From the early days of jazz to its modern interpretations, you’ll be taken on a musical journey through the history of this quintessential American genre with world renowned clarinetist Ken Peplowski and rising vocalist Sydney McSweeney!

Jazz bands throughout Columbus City Schools have been working hard all year preparing repertoire for the annual Columbus City Schools JazzFest. As their families enjoy a rotation of phenomenal musicians inside the Lincoln Theatre, each band will be upstairs in the Jazz Academy warming up and participating in educational masterclasses to hone their skills as a jazz musician.

The Columbus Youth Jazz (CYJ) Girls Project is a month-long jazz ensemble that celebrates female and gender expansive students in jazz. During each session, we will develop our skills as an ensemble while exploring jazz repertoire, style, improvisation and more, creating a fun and encouraging space for students to build confidence on their instrument.

PBJ & Jazz concerts are proudly presented by Grange Insurance. These short and interactive concerts are designed to introduce jazz and American music to young children and their families. Featuring some of Columbus’ finest musicians and ensembles, PBJ & Jazz concerts are the perfect way for families to enjoy top-quality jazz music while children learn and play.
