This is King’s second collaboration with Fischer and his ninth collaboration with Moran, created in celebration of LINES Ballet’s 40th anniversary season.

Over the course of The Grauman Fellowship, Artem Diaz Kolesov Fominyx has developed his artistry by taking on the challenge of learning, performing, and recording two large collections of music: the Brahms violin sonatas and the Ysaÿe violin sonatas. This evening, Artem will be replicating the experience of The People’s Ensemble meetings, which usually concluded with community members inviting him to share his progress on the Ysaÿe sonatas. His care in learning these technically demanding works included a thorough analysis of notation and musical ideas, which he incorporated into his lessons throughout his project. Artem encouraged the participants to also practice sharing their own progress to others in the community, through his weekly learning engagements which helped individual participants to lean into their own artistry to best support the ensemble. 

In addition to the experience they developed together to present on this evening, the result of their preparation can be heard in the performance of the second movement of the fourth sonata, where Artem and the People’s Ensemble will collaborate in performance.

Artem Diaz Kolesov Fominyx: Ysaÿe Sonatas No. 4, 5 and 6

With myriad colors and sounds spanning two centuries, this program offers a unique blend of artistic collaboration and instrumental and interpretational distinction between performers Jordan Bak (viola), Geneva Lewis (violin), and Evren Ozel (piano). From the deeply dramatic and textural landscape of Claude Debussy, the human vulnerability of Robert Schumann, to the precocious, awe-inspiring genius of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, much is to be heard in each of these dynamic works of art. Max Reger rounds out the program with his incredibly passionate Piano Trio No. 1 in B Minor, showcasing the young 18-year-old composer’s musical and technical maturity and brimming with bravura, sensitivity, and promise.

Equally at home at the piano or on the podium, Jeffrey Kahane is recognized around the world for his mastery of a diverse repertoire ranging from Bach and Mozart to the music of our time. After 20 years as Music Director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Kahane makes his Wallis debut with his interpretation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, long regarded as the most serious and ambitious work for the keyboard. Kahane has appeared as a soloist with major orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra and the Chicago and San Francisco symphonies among many others, and is also a popular artist at all of the major US summer festivals. In August 2016, he was appointed Music Director of the Sarasota Music Festival, and he is also currently the Artistic Adviser of the Sarasota Orchestra.

A new drama based on the real-life friendship between two icons of the 20th century who dealt with the injustices of a highly divided era in American history. In 1937, after performing in Princeton, New Jersey, legendary Black contralto Marian Anderson is denied lodging at the Nassau Inn because of her race. When physicist Albert Einstein invites her to stay at his home, the two form a profound friendship that would last a lifetime, rooted in their love for music and their commitment to human rights. Based on true events, My Lord, What a Night takes us into Einstein’s home and imagines the conversations and circumstances that led to Anderson’s historic concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and the beginning of the civil rights movement. Sheldon Epps (Blues in the Night) returns to The Wallis to direct the production.

Ming-Kai Tao, a Chinese violinist in his 90s, visits the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum to see the violin he donated. When he picks up the instrument that accompanied him throughout his life and plays, we are magically transported back to Shanghai of the 1930s and ‘40s, where Ming-Kai confronts his rebellious teenage self in this city where East and West clash in surprising ways. We meet the local Chinese during war time and many Jewish refugee musicians fleeing the Nazis who would train many of the first generation of Chinese classical musicians in the Shanghai Jewish Ghetto. The unifying power of music brings these two cultures together as they help each other survive the war, setting ripples in motion that carry through to this day, 90 years later.

In addition to solo performances, he has appeared with ensembles and symphonies around the globe. A fierce advocate for contemporary arts, Woodshas collaborated and worked with a wide array of artists ranging from the genres of classical, rock, and visual arts. Woods has also recently joined the faculty at the Thornton School of Music at USC.

Actor, host, writer, designer, and producer Isaac Mizrahi’s acclaimed concert performances have been described by The New York Times as “determined to challenge the cultural status quo and help blaze a path into a more liberated future where few subjects are off-limits.” His one-of-a-kind show brings together comedy, commentary, and an array of classic and soon-to-be classic songs from Stephen Sondheim to Blondie, from Comden & Green to Madonna. Excitingly, the original manuscript for Le Dernier Sorcier was acquired a couple of years ago by Harvard Library, which gave Sing for Hope Co-Founder Camille Zamora permission to transcribe, publish, record, and perform the work, with her English language narration punctuating the sung performance story-bookstyle. Sing for Hope’s world premiere production at The Wallis will feature Monica Yunus in the lead role of the bold young Stella, Camille Zamora as La Reine, an all-star cast, and a special surprise celebrity narrator!

Formed in 1994, the ensemble quickly won chamber music’s top competitions, including the 1998 Naumburg Chamber Music Award. For its Wallis debut, the quartet is joined by the brilliantly multi-faceted Anthony McGill, principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic, an exceptional soloist in his own right. These spectacular musicians will bring the beauty and depth of chamber music to their Wallis debut.

Making its Wallis debut, Luminario Ballet of Los Angeles is a repertory ballet, aerial, and modern dance company founded in 2009 by Judith FLEX Helle and the Charles Evans Foundation NY. Luminario has toured globally and performed locally commissioned work with the LA Phil at Walt Disney Concert Hall and across numerous mediums such as music videos, television, film, virtual reality, and soon, NFTs. The company’s two programs include Heroes, Sheroes, and Eros, in which a collective of Luminario Ballet choreographers and special guests explore the tangled paths of history/herstory/ourstory; and The Last Supper – a rollicking tale of Jesus, Judas and Mary Magdalene’s visit to the Coachella Music Festival in 2017. This wild tale of the ages looks at themes of personality, Black Lives Matter, relationships, sexuality, drug addiction, betrayal, and resolution through explosive, emotional dance theater choreography from ballet to acrobatics to aerial dance.

Join us for an evening of chamber music with our Inaugural Grauman Fellow Artem Diaz Kolesov and guest pianist Evelyn Lee, featuring Brahms' three violin sonatas. The two parts, violin and piano, beautifully imitate, echo and intertwine forming chamber unity with plenty of lyricism and virtuosity for both players.
Kolesov, described by the Chicago Tribune as “a violinist of fine promise,” was born in Maloyaroslavetz, Russia, won international competitions in Tallin, Estonia, and Freiburg, Germany, among others, and performed with the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic at age fifteen.

Try/Step/Trip is a spoken-word, multi-character musical performed through the language of step dance. The story follows the journey of an anonymous narrator as he reimagines his experience in a court-ordered drug rehabilitation program. Inspired by Brathwaite’s own history, Try/Step/Trip layers characters, poetic verse, and dialogue over music to create a theatrical piece that blurs the lines between hip-hop and dramatic performance. Try/Step/Trip emerges from the belief that the subjugation of Black people is an American ritual; that the criminal justice system now functions as a normalized rite of passage for too many young Black males.

An evening of virtuosic chamber performances, featuring soloists Yura Lee in one of the earliest known Viola Concertos, Telemann’s Concerto in G Major, and David Washburn performing a hidden gem: the charming pre-classical Concerto for Trumpet in E-flat Major, by little-known Czech composer Johan Baptist Georg Neruda. The program also features Corelli’s rich and festive Concerto Grosso, Opus 6, No. 4; Geminiani’s charming Concerto Grosso in D Major; and Handel’s grand Concerto Grosso in A Major, Opus 6, No. 11, one of the most celebrated works for strings from the Baroque era.

Brown & Dancers in an exploration of self-empowerment, Black love, brotherhood, and resilience that examines aspects of Black life that are too often appropriated, rewritten, or silenced. Ms. Brown made history this past year as the first Black director in the history of the MET opera and as the first Black female to be nominated for a Tony Award as both director and choreographer for a play on Broadway (For Colored Girls). With traditional African rhythms at its center, ink weaves together African-American social dance, African, tap, jazz, modern and hip-hop movement to lift up and celebrate Black lives, Black resilience and Black superpowers.

What happens when the natural order of things is upended? Falling Out of Time is a new work from the Grammy Award-winning composer Osvaldo Golijov performed by an ensemble of musicians, including some members of the Silkroad Ensemble, led by violinist Johnny Gandelsman. Rooted in David Grossman’s novel of the same name, this infinitely nuanced story in voices narrates a profound journey of grief and solace, a journey “out of time” as parents grieve the death of a child, a quest to comprehend a loss with no name.
It so happens that we all are, as a world, living in a moment in which the “natural” order of things has been upended. More than ever, we are in need of stories that help us make sense of the broken pieces. Falling Out of Time is one such story.
