At the height of his powers, Scarlatti arrived in 1703 from Naples, bringing with him the latest musical fashions. Although opera performances were banned there by Pope Innocent XII, the themes of Christian faith found new expression in the oratorio using the means of modern musical drama. George Frideric Handel was at the heart of the action as the harpsichordist in Scarlatti's Marian oratorio Il Giardino di rose and was able to close the 1708 oratorio season with his work La Resurrezione . A year earlier, the young Handel had written his psalm setting Dixit Dominus – a masterpiece of Baroque choral music. In 1720, Scarlatti was commissioned by Cardinal Francesco Acquaviva d'Aragona to compose his eponymous Messa di S. Cecilia

Countless composers have set the medieval sequence Stabat Mater dolorosa to music, from Josquin Desprez and Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina to Krzystof Penderecki and Arvo Pärt. But perhaps the most famous version dates from the 1730s. At the age of just 26, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi died in the spa town of Pozzuoli near Naples after a failed attempt to overcome tuberculosis. He spent the last months of his life there in a monastery, working feverishly on his Stabat Mater . By then, he had enjoyed a meteoric career as a composer, with his operas in particular being popular with audiences both at home and abroad. After his early death, however, it was the Stabat Mater that immortalized his name to this day, becoming the most copied work of the time shortly after his last breath. A version with choral additions by his contemporary Benjamin Cooke will be performed in Knechtsteden.

At the Chopin and his Europe 2025 Festival in Warsaw, Concerto Köln will play works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Feliks Janiewicz.

In Dresden and on tour through Europe’s musical centers, the results of this spectacular sound workshop and the historically informed perspective on Wagner’s epoch-making theatrical oeuvre have been celebrated as revolutionary. In the third part of the »Ring«, »Siegfried», depictions of nature and the visceral portrayals of action reveal Wagner at the height of his expressive musical powers. As in previous years, the newly-won transparent orchestra sound and the focus on the singers’ treatment of language will ensure novel listening experiences.

Concerto Köln is a long-time favorite of San Diego audiences. This season, they return with Trinidadian soprano Jeanine de Bique to present "Mirrors," a program of arias by Handel, Graun, Telemann, and others, examining how the same opera heroine might be differently conceived by major Baroque composers. The program is titled after their 2021 album that was enthusiastically received by critics and the public.

Trinidadian soprano Jeanine De Bique appears with renowned period instrument orchestra Concerto Köln in a program celebrating female protagonists. Juxtaposing a series of Handel heroines against their counterparts in operas by Handel’s contemporaries, Carl Heinrich Graun and Riccardo Broschi, De Bique will sing arias from works such as Rodrigo, Giulio Cesare, Rodelinda, Partenope, and more.
This performance marks the West Coast premiere of three works discovered by Concerto Köln and being sung on tour for the very first time, which include Graun’s “Risolvere non oso“ and “L’empio rigor del fato“ from Rodelinda and Broschi’s “Mi restano le lagrime“ from L’isola d’ Alcina.

It is the first courtroom drama in history. In Johann Sebastian Bach’s St John Passion, Jesus stands before Pontius Pilate to answer for his actions while the Jews gathered outside demand his death. The St Thomas cantor created a gripping tragedy from the sparse Gospel, which is still one of the most dramaturgically effective works in music history. Bach translated the almost scenic plot into vivid tonal colours. The orchestral prelude opens the inexorable sequence of capture, condemnation and crucifixion with disturbing dissonances, before leading into an enchanting choral movement in praise of God.
