Clacton-on-Sea, United Kingdom
West Cliff Theatre, located in Clacton-on-Sea, has a rich history dating back to 1894 when Bert Graham and his London Concert Company began performing in the open air. Originally set up in various locations, the group settled in West Cliff Gardens in 1899, where they constructed a makeshift theatre. By 1928, a permanent 800-seat theatre was built, officially opened by Sir Frederick Rice. The theatre gained prominence under various ownerships, including William Hinds, who also founded the Hammer House of Horror. Despite challenges, such as the impact of World War II and the rise of television, the theatre continued to thrive, hosting numerous stars like Frankie Howerd and Ruthie Henshall. In 1959, Clacton Council purchased the theatre, ensuring its survival. The West Cliff Theatre Trust, formed in the 1980s, revitalized the venue, leading to its current status as a year-round cultural hub. Today, the theatre remains a beloved institution, celebrated for its vibrant productions and community engagement.
