Leipzig, Germany
The Gewandhausorchester, also known simply as the Gewandhaus Orchestra, is one of the oldest and most prestigious orchestras in the world, based in Leipzig, Germany. It was founded in 1743 as a private music society and has since played a significant role in the development of European classical music. The orchestra's first permanent home was constructed in 1781, famously named the Gewandhaus, from which the ensemble took its name. Renowned composers such as Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, who became its music director in 1835, are part of its rich history. He helped establish cultural traditions in Leipzig like the performance of Bach’s works, greatly increasing the orchestra's prestige. The orchestra's home, the Gewandhaus, has hosted numerous world-class soloists and conductors. The Gewandhausorchester continues to be an artistic beacon with a diverse repertoire, collaborating with the Leipzig Opera and the Thomanerchor Cathedral Choir.
